Adjunct - English Language Acquisition Instructor

Pay is $1,304 per credit hour.
GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, the instructor is responsible for fostering student learning in English for a Kirkwood campus. The instructor must evaluate, record, and report student achievement and progress in assigned courses in accordance with department, division, and College policies and procedures.
Successful ELA instructors have a good foundation in pedagogy, theories of language acquisition/learning, and sensibilities for working with students of other cultural and language backgrounds.
Adjunct faculty positions are temporary, part-time positions scheduled intermittently based on institutional need. Adjuncts are not guaranteed work in any semester and are notified of course assignments prior to each term as courses become available.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Effectively organize and prepare learning activities for assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi.
- Prepare and maintain accurate course syllabi and course handouts for each course taught.
- Evaluate and record student performance/achievement on a regular basis and provide regular student feedback.
- Participate in student learning assessment projects.
- Participate in the development and/or execution of departmental tasks and projects in instruction or instructional support.
- Assist in maintaining appropriate materials, equipment, and supplies to support the learning environment in established department courses.

- Be available on an as-needed basis for student questions and discussions regarding their performance.
- Possess a working knowledge of personal computers and educational media equipment.

- Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, colleagues, staff, administrators, and the general public.
- Read, understand, and express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form.

Performance Expectations: Professionalism and Attention to Administrative Detail
- Prepare for, attend, and facilitate all classes and finals as scheduled.
- Communicate in advance to staff and dean when class is cancelled, is moved to another location (such as the library), or is taught by someone other than you.
- Check rosters to ensure that students in your section are registered for your section.
- Report attendance for financial aid purposes.
- Respond to students and to their work in a civil and timely fashion.
- Report midterm grades and final grades accurately and by the published deadlines.
- Respond to staff questions about scheduling matters.
- Respond to staff questions for book orders.
- Respond to staff and administrative communications about individual students.
- Respond with data for the department assessment projects.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:
Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.A. in any discipline
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
- B.A. or M.A. in English, TESOL, Linguistics, or a related field.
- Previous teaching experience is a plus. Previous experience living and teaching abroad is a plus.
