****Our Program and Who We Are Looking For****
Portland Community College seeks two full-time instructors to teach English for Speakers of Other Languages (one position at Southeast campus and one position at Sylvania campus). These positions will begin in September 2026. We are looking for colleagues who will demonstrate discipline expertise, learner-centered teaching, and shows sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities of community college students.
Successful candidates will be qualified to teach all ESOL levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) courses. Successful candidates can expect to teach approximately six-nine courses per year (PCC is on a quarter system). PCC's courses are offered in a variety of modalities and the candidate should expect to teach a majority of their course load fully in-person.
***Tentative screening timeline:***
- First interviews (Zoom) February 4-6, 2026.
- Second interviews and teaching demonstrations (in-person and on campus) February 17-27, 2026.
- Finalist interviews with AVP and Pathway Dean (Zoom) after March 9th, 2026.
These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position. Throughout the screening process, you will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in TESOL from an accredited institution.
- OR Master's degree in related field (such as foreign language, linguistics, speech, anthropology, English, adult education, intercultural communication, international studies or other fields upon SAC approval) PLUS proficiency in a foreign language and a TESOL certificate or substantial (40 quarter hours or 30 semester hours) coursework at the 400 level or higher in TESOL methodology from an accredited institution. TESOL certificate or course work must include the study of linguistics, language acquisition theory, and language teaching methodology. K-12 ELL endorsement is not an appropriate equivalent to or substitute for a TESOL certificate.
- OR Master's degree in a related field (such as foreign language, linguistics, speech, anthropology, English, adult education, intercultural communication, international studies or other fields upon SAC approval) PLUS proficiency in a foreign language and five years experience in an adult ESL classroom teaching a variety of skills and levels (pre-literate to college) to students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
Success Criteria:
- Demonstrates understanding of ESOL theory and content as specified in the Course Content Outcome Guides for PCC ESOL Courses
- Demonstrates awareness and understanding of your own cultural background and privilege, as well as structural inequities, and how they impact your teaching
- Demonstrates effective oral and written communication
- Demonstrates experience working independently and as a member of a team
- Demonstrates experience leading and/or working collaboratively with partners across institutions
- Demonstrates excellence in learner-centered teaching
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prefer at least five years of experience teaching a college-level English curriculum to speakers of other languages. Experience should include:
- Teaching beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of ESOL
- Leadership and/or working collaboratively with partners

Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($73,911) and Step 3 ($78,408) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.
