Position Overview
The Department of Population Medicine & Diagnostic Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University invites applications for a Clinical Instructor faculty position in the Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program (MSMP). This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track appointment.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have experience in population health management for companion animals, high-quality/high-volume spay/neuter, and clinical practice in a shelter setting.
Primary responsibilities will include providing clinical service through teaching to include:
- Clinical instruction of interns and veterinary students
- Didactic teaching in rounds and classes
- Clinical outreach through a shelter medicine rotation to animal shelters
The Clinical Instructor will oversee students and interns providing medical care to shelter animals, including:
- In-shelter animals
- Foster animals
- Urgent care patients presenting for surrender to the SPCA
Additional services may be provided to low-income owners through collaboration and grant programs.
The Clinical Instructor will perform, instruct, and oversee shelter medicine and common surgical procedures, including:
- High-quality, high-volume spay/neuter procedures
- Dentistry
- Enucleations
- Amputations
- Other procedures
The Clinical Instructor may oversee students providing medical care and performing surgery on the Primary Care Surgery (PCS) service at Cornell’s Small Animal Community Practice.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree with at least 2 years of clinical experience. Experience in a shelter environment is required.
Completion of a Shelter Medicine Internship or Residency is preferred.
Program Information
The MSMP is comprised of five full-time and one part-time faculty veterinarians, and the program is supported by three experienced licensed veterinary technicians (LVT), a program coordinator, and two interns.
For clinical work, we partner with a local shelter full-time and provide regional clinical support. Additionally, our consultation service engages regionally and nationally through both remote and onsite collaborations.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is $80,000–$120,000 and will be commensurate with academic credentials and experience.
