Job Duties:
The Brody School of Medicine Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program is seeking a temporary Interprofessional Nurse Educator to provide interprofessional clinical, educational, and technical expertise in the development and implementation of simulation activities. This individual will work approximately 1 day per week. A typical day will be 8am-5pm. Occasional work outside normal business hours (8am-5pm required). Specific dates will be assigned based on class schedules (typically 3-6 months in advance).
Duties will include -
Instruction: 90%
- Facilitate and co-debrief interdisciplinary simulation sessions as needed using standards of best practice in simulation.
- Participate in simulation scenarios as an embedded nursing professional to provide an authentic interprofessional experience that reflects real-world clinical practice.
- Obtain vital signs, medical history, chief complaint, and health history.
- Assess mental health status.
- Convey findings to care team.
- Teach procedural skills to medical students and residents, such as ultrasound guided peripheral IV insertion, sterile technique, foley insertion, and others.
- Demonstrate to medical students how to perform an initial patient assessment as performed in clinical settings by a nurse, such as obtain vital signs, medical history, chief complaint, and health history
- Teach medical students and residents appropriate medications for medical interventions in an emergency setting
- Teach appropriate use of medical equipment to medical students and residents, such as how to operate a defibrillator, IV pump, and others.
- Promote simulation best practices and initiatives established by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL).
Administration (10%)
- Assist simulation team in ensuring correct medical supplies are available for use during scenarios.
- Create mock medications, IVS, and assist with moulage to create realism.
- Attend planning meetings for classes and staff meetings.
- Review scenario case template and facilitator documents.
- Attend dry-runs of scenarios in person or virtually, depending on date of dry-run (dates are variable).
- Attends simulation training sessions through the Office of Clinical Simulation.
Note: Other duties as assigned.
Contingent on availability of funding.
Minimum Education/Experience:
- An active Registered Nurse North Carolina License is required. Active licensure must be maintained throughout employment.
- Masters degree and one (1) year of experience working as a clinical nurse and/or teaching experience in a critical care setting (such as emergency department, intensive care unit); or will accept in substitution a bachelors degree plus at least three (3) years working as a clinical nurse and/or teaching experience in a critical care setting (such as emergency department, intensive care unit).
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
- Registered Nurse North Carolina License is required.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Adult Educational theory, methodologies, and delivery.
- Knowledge of fundamentals of care across the lifespan (pediatric, adult, OB, geriatrics).
- Experience teaching using simulation-based education.
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator certification (CHSE) from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).
- Active BLS, ACLS, and PALs certifications.
- BLS Instructor Certification.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a track record of scholarly dissemination in presentation and publication form.
- Proficiency in Microsoft software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Exquisite interpersonal, collaborative, negotiation, team-building and communication skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
