Job Summary:

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), entry-level Research Services Laboratory Position at the Barbara Davis Center (BDC) for Diabetes. The successful candidate will work in the Research Division of the BDC in the laboratory of Dr. Lori Sussel on projects exploring the molecular mechanisms regulating pancreatic islet development and function in normal and diabetic conditions. The laboratory primarily uses cell lines and genetically modified mice as model systems for molecular studies. The successful candidate will play an important role in identifying novel mechanisms underlying islet cell dysfunction in T1D and T2D.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigator (PI) and lab members with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Maintenance of a laboratory inventory. Ordering and restocking reagents for the laboratory.
  • Maintenance and genotyping of mouse colonies.
  • Maintenance of mouse and human cell cultures.
  • Molecular cloning
  • Molecular and histological analysis of mouse tissues, including genomic DNA isolation, PCR, RNA isolation, gene expression analysis by qPCR and NGS sequencing, protein localization or quantification by immunofluorescence analysis, Western blotting, or ELISA assay.
  • In vitro knockdown experiments using siRNA followed by quantitative analysis of gene expression.
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

The Barbara Davis Center (BDC) is a unique entity located on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus devoted to treating patients with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and performing research to prevent and cure T1D. The BDC Research Division consists of 12 independent research labs focused on all aspects of T1D research including immunology, islet biology and stem cell biology. The Sussel lab uses sophisticated molecular techniques and mouse and human stem cell models to characterize the role of islet dysfunction in contributing to T1D.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field and experience with data analysis
  • Specific work experience in molecular, biochemical or cell biology techniques.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office Software programs.
  • Experience with Data Science

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Knowledge of human stem cell research techniques
  • Knowledge of mouse pancreas research techniques
  • Ability to analyze immunofluorescent data
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information
  • Willing to work with cells, tissues and laboratory mice
