Salary Range: Up to $46,200 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Hours: up to 40 hours per week, exempt.

Essential Functions

Job Summary

Provide oversight and supervision of scientific teaching laboratories and related technical staff.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for the laboratory set-up and efficient operations of scientific teaching laboratories.
  2. Supervises technical staff who assist in laboratory preparation and maintenance, including partial supervision of laboratory instructors (TAs and lecturers).
  3. Assists in instructing students on the use of instrumentation.
  4. Orders chemicals and equipment for scientific teaching laboratories; maintains an up-to-date inventory of chemicals in the teaching laboratories and chemical stockroom.
  5. Orders, maintains and performs minor repairs on teaching instrumentation.
  6. Responsible for safe handling of chemicals and disposal of chemical and glass waste.
  7. Provides safety instruction for laboratory classes.
  8. Assists in planning and sets up the chemical section of stockrooms.
  9. Updates chemical and equipment inventories.
  10. Delivers safety instruction to students.
  11. Takes a proactive approach to assist co-workers in various tasks, to ensure safety.
  12. Performs work tasks in a safe manner and in accordance with work instructions.
  13. Proactively makes recommendations to improve safety.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area from an accredited institution.
  • One (1) year experience in laboratory supervision or laboratory instruction.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UTSA and its infrastructure.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of sources of supplies relating to the laboratory experiments.
  • Good personnel and organizational skills.
  • Use and maintenance of chemical laboratory teaching instrumentation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Working Conditions

Working Environment:

  • Standard laboratory environment.
  • Some exposure to hazardous materials and chemicals.

Physical Demands:

  • Must have the ability to perform physical labor in moving stocks and maintaining laboratory storerooms and teaching laboratories in a clean and orderly condition.

This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
