Job Description

Serves as a laboratory technician within the Laboratory Central Receiving area in Virginia Tech Animal Laboratory Services (ViTALS). Provides customer service to both internal and referring veterinarians as well as researchers who submit samples for testing within the laboratory. Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), performs procedures to prepare, expedite and facilitate laboratory analysis of specimens, routing those specimens to the correct in-house or external laboratory. Performs general laboratory activities as assigned. Must report to work during inclement weather closings.

Serves as the primary courier for the laboratory. The ViTALS Courier is responsible for completing the assigned courier route on a daily basis. This route typically includes veterinary clinics located between Blacksburg and the Roanoke Valley, as well as surrounding areas such as Radford, Dublin, and Pulaski, before returning to Blacksburg. Key responsibilities include transporting laboratory samples and supplies, maintaining effective communication with veterinary clinics, and coordinating routine maintenance for the state vehicle.

Required Qualifications

• Working knowledge of veterinary medical laboratory practices and procedures.
• Interacts professionally and courteously with clients, staff, and stakeholders. Ability to work well with others.
• Ability to learn new skills and be adaptable.
• Uses basic computer and keyboarding skills for data entry, recordkeeping, and documentation.
• Writes, follows, and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Demonstrates strong organizational, communication, customer service, and phone etiquette skills.
• Maintains reliable, punctual attendance and meets scheduled pick-up and delivery times.
• Maintains a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and complies with university vehicle policies.

Bachelor of Science in related field. MT/CLS(ASCP), LVT
