Laboratory Technician - Robotics & Intelligent Systems Specialist

As a Laboratory Technician, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting the day-to-day operations of diverse laboratories within the Mechatronics, Electronics, and Digital Cluster. You will ensure the smooth facilitation of teaching and research activities by maintaining equipment, providing technical expertise, and supporting academic staff. This role offers you the chance to work across various technical fields, including robotics, AI, and cybersecurity, enhancing your skills and contributing to groundbreaking research.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide Expert Technical Support: Deliver specialised services and support to teaching and research activities, ensuring effective use of laboratory equipment.
  • Manage Laboratory Operations: Oversee equipment maintenance, facilitate purchases, and ensure compliance with OHS requirements.
  • Support Teaching and Research: Assist staff and students with equipment usage, prepare for practical classes, and maintain accurate laboratory records.
  • Ensure Safety and Compliance: Conduct inspections, develop risk assessments, and manage lab bookings and inductions.

You may be a great fit if:

You hold a relevant qualification or equivalent experience in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science, with expertise in automation, intelligent systems, and research support. You have strong knowledge of robotics and automation technologies, motion control, sensor integration, and microcontroller programming, along with hands-on experience in electronics prototyping, PCB design, CAD/CAM, and 3D printing. Proficiency with ROS, SLAM, and related simulation tools, as well as experience in motion tracking and sensing systems, is desirable. You demonstrate strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills, while maintaining high standards of technical support, safety, and professional integrity.

You may also:

  • Expertise in robotics and automation systems, including motion control and sensor integration, and experience with robotics and machine learning development environments such as ROS, SLAM, and reinforcement learning frameworks
  • Proficiency in microcontroller programming, electronics prototyping, PCB design, and 3D printing, as well as competence in CAD/CAM design and rapid prototyping
  • Experience with motion tracking, LiDAR, and sensing systems for data acquisition and analysis
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational abilities in dynamic, multidisciplinary settings
  • Commitment to professional integrity, high service standards, and compliance with OHS and laboratory regulations

Salary: UoM 6 - $100,847 - $109,163 p.a. plus 17% super
