Lead Cyber Engineer

Position Summary

As the Lead Cyber Engineer, you will be an integral leader of the cybersecurity department while collaborating with stakeholders across the university ecosystem, reporting to the Manager Cyber Engineering. This is a full-time exempt position, eligible for USC's benefits and perks, and is remote.

The Lead Cyber Engineer leads the daily operations of the cyber engineering team, playing a critical role in safeguarding the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the university's operational technology (OT) and internet of things (IoT) systems. Supports the cyber defense team with technical configuration adjustments for security tools that defend against and identify cyber incidents. Oversees the design, implementation, configuration, and operational maintenance of key cybersecurity tools and technologies. Ensures security configurations and settings adhere to the university's cybersecurity architecture guidelines and industry best practices across all technology environments (e.g., cloud, network, OT, IoT). Provides input on cybersecurity engineering resource planning and assists in the development of operational processes and documentation related to key security tools. Serves as a mentor and technical leader to cyber engineers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the design, implementation, configuration, and maintenance of key cybersecurity tools and technologies (e.g., endpoint protection, key management, certificate management, data loss prevention).
  • Leading the cyber engineering team in daily operations and managing cybersecurity technologies.
  • Ensuring maintenance of security tools and implementation of security configurations for various systems/environments.
  • Leading the implementation and enforcement of zero trust security models.
  • Implementing secure cloud and hybrid security infrastructure, integrating threat detection and monitoring tools.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate cybersecurity measures into IT infrastructure.
  • Coordinating with the cyber engineering manager to develop strategic plans and prioritize initiatives.
  • Assisting in the development of operational processes and documentation.
  • Providing technical leadership and mentorship to cyber engineers.
  • Optimizing security automation and managing multiple cyber engineering security tools.
  • Encouraging a workplace culture aligned with USC's values.

Minimum Qualifications

Great candidates will have:

  • 5 years of experience in security engineering and/or related fields.
  • A bachelor's degree or combined experience and education.
  • Proven leadership and team management experience in cybersecurity engineering.
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with multiple security tools.
  • Demonstrated organizational, critical thinking, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Technical expertise in security infrastructure and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with security frameworks and standards (e.g., CIS, NIST, ISO).
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity trends, threats, and technologies.
  • Strong project management abilities and understanding of cloud computing models.
  • One or more relevant certifications (e.g., GIAC, CISSP, Azure Security, CCSP, CompTIA Security+ [CASP+]).

Preferred Qualifications

Exceptional candidates will also have:

  • 7 years of related experience.
  • A bachelor's degree in information science, computer science, computer engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in a university environment.
  • Familiarity with existing university security architecture.
  • Strong communication skills and hands-on experience configuring security tools.
  • Knowledge of OT/IoT systems and security controls.

Salary and Benefits

The annual base salary range is $158,551.38 to $177,190.16. USC provides benefits-eligible employees with a broad range of perks, including well-being programs.
