Background of the recruitment and description of the project
The Department of Socio-Cultural Environmental Studies comprises four academic programs: Society & Humanity, Spatial Planning & Design, Water & Material Cycle, and the cooperative program Spatial Information Science. Based on an interdisciplinary approach integrating the humanities, social sciences, engineering, and the natural sciences, the Department promotes education and research that comprehensively examines human living environments from socio-cultural perspectives, addresses emerging environmental challenges, and creates new academic frontiers.
This position is affiliated with the Environmental Spatial Informatics program within the Spatial Planning & Design. The field is dedicated to interdisciplinary research and education that integrates urban design and urban planning studies to envision and implement sustainable and inclusive approaches to urban restructuring and management. Its research addresses increasingly complex urban challenges, including population decline, environmental crises, industrial transformation, land-use change, and digital transformation.
We seek a scholar who will contribute to the advancement of interdisciplinary urban studies by addressing highly complex urban issues, including urban shrinkage under population decline, land-use transformation, decarbonization, and the creation and management of public spaces, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The successful candidate is expected to understand cities as dynamic socio-spatial environments shaped by the interplay of everyday life, local history and culture, climate change, and disaster risks, and to develop integrated approaches to planning, design, and management across multiple spatial scales. Candidates with an interdisciplinary and international perspective who are motivated to pioneer new methodologies for urban design in rapidly changing societies are particularly encouraged to apply.
Work content and job description
The successful candidate may be involved in urban design practice at the Urban Design Center, integrating research, education, and practical activities. The successful candidate may also contribute to undergraduate education in the Department of Urban Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, The University of Tokyo.

- Annual salary: 9 million yen - 12 million yen
- Wages description: Salary will be determined in accordance with the University's regulations, taking into consideration academic background and work experience. Various allowances will be provided in accordance with university regulations.
