Learning Experience Designer
Job Description
The Learning Experience Designer (LxD) collaborates with faculty and academic staff to design, develop, and continuously improve high-quality learning experiences for students and professionals. Working within the Center for Teaching Excellence, the LxD provides consultation, instructional design expertise, and project management support for online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses and programs.
This role partners closely with instructors to translate learning goals into engaging and effective learning experiences grounded in evidence-based teaching practices. The LxD also contributes to faculty development initiatives and supports innovative, ethical, and accessible uses of educational technology in higher education.
Essential Function 1
Collaborate with faculty and staff to design or redesign courses, programs, and learning experiences, including fully online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced face-to-face formats.
Essential Function 2
Consult with instructors on instructional challenges, pedagogical approaches, assessment strategies, and effective use of educational technologies.
Essential Function 3
Apply evidence-based instructional design principles (e.g., backward design, Universal Design for Learning) to create all encompassing, learner-centered experiences; Develop learning activity prototypes (e.g., interactive lessons, assessments, reflective activities, peer engagement) that align learning objectives, assessment, and instruction.
Essential Function 4
Manage learning design projects from initiation through implementation, including timelines, workflows, stakeholder communication, and quality assurance; Test learning experiences and provide clear, actionable recommendations to improve learner experience and instructional effectiveness; monitor pilot offerings and analyze learner feedback and course data to inform iterative improvements.
Essential Function 5
Facilitate collaborative decision-making among faculty, subject matter experts, and project team members; draft, edit, and refine instructional materials, including scripts, storyboards, multimedia content outlines, assessments, rubrics, and learning activity instructions.
Essential Function 6
Build well-organized, accessible, and user-friendly learning experiences using GGC’s learning management system and related platforms; conduct quality assurance and accessibility reviews to ensure accuracy, usability, and compliance with institutional and legal standards.
Essential Function 7
Design and facilitate workshops, consultations, guides, and templates that build faculty capacity in course design, online teaching, and effective use of learning technologies.
Essential Function 8
Contribute to institutional initiatives related to online learning quality, digital pedagogy, accessibility, and emerging educational technologies (including responsible uses of AI).
Essential Function 9
Stay current with trends and research in instructional design, learning sciences, and higher education pedagogy to inform practice; perform other duties as assigned in support of the Center for Teaching Excellence.
Qualifications
- 4 Year / Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum of three years of experience in instructional design, teaching, educational technology, user experience design, or a related field
- Bachelor's or master's degree in instructional design, education, learning sciences, educational technology, or a related field
- Experience designing online or hybrid courses or programs in higher education
- Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., D2L or similar platforms)
- Experience applying design thinking or learner-centered design methodologies
- Experience supporting faculty development or consulting with instructors
$56,800 - $71,000; Salary offer will be dependent on candidate's experience and qualifications, internal equity considerations, budget availability, and salary administration guidelines.
