Lecturer - Assistant Director of Bands (Music)
SUMMARY
The Department of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) invites applications for an Assistant Director of Bands/Lecturer of Music, a non-tenure track position renewable for up to five years (with an option for a 6th and final year) beginning Fall 2026.
SFA is a student-centered, comprehensive university enrolling approximately 11,200 students. It is located in Nacogdoches, Texas, approximately 150 miles north of Houston and 175 miles southeast of Dallas. The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in wind band conducting or music education
- Three or more years of successful public-school teaching at the secondary level
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate in music with emphasis in wind band conducting and/or music education
- Collegiate teaching and/or conducting experience
- Experience in marching band design, drill writing, and/or music arranging
Job Duties
- Assists with The Lumberjack Marching Band and its components, including color guard, twirlers, and drum line.
- Conducts Symphonic Band (3rd concert band).
- Oversees the Basketball Pep Bands, including budgetary responsibilities.
- Teaches undergraduate conducting courses.
- Teaches other music courses and duties commensurate with candidate’s strengths and School of Music needs. These assignments would likely include, but not be limited to, overseeing our university band (4th concert band, only operates in the Spring) and teaching instrumental methods courses.
- Works with the Director and Associate Director of Bands in the cooperative teaching and administration of the band program.
- Participates in recruiting, departmental meetings and auditions.
- Serves as a field supervisor for student teachers depending on need.
JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a full-time, ten-month, faculty position responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the chair.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in the field in which the individual will be teaching is required.
Practical experience sufficient to teach at the university level, through teaching or profession, is required. Experience teaching at the university level is preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs an equivalent of thirty teaching load credits (TLC) for the combined fall and spring semesters; reduction of teaching load through reassignment of duties is possible under certain circumstances.
- May conduct supplemental instructional activities such as independent studies, internships, and advising.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides services to the university and the profession and engages in research/scholarly/creative activities.
- May supervise the work of student and/or graduate assistants.
- May serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
