SUMMARY

The Department of Media and Communication at Stephen F. Austin State University, a member of The University of Texas System, has an opening for a full-time, nine-month lecturer position in communication. This non-tenure track position offers the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses and engage in departmental service within a collaborative academic environment. Salary is commensurate with experience. The selected candidate will begin in August 2026 and will need to relocate to Nacogdoches, Texas. This is not a remote position.

The Department of Media and Communication’s undergraduate degree ranks consistently among the top 10 undergraduate majors on campus, while the master’s degree is ranked 10th campus-wide in headcount. At the undergraduate level, students can choose a concentration of broadcast journalism, social media, advertising and public relations, or communication.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in communication or a related discipline is required. Doctorate or completion of all but dissertation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach face-to-face undergraduate courses in public speaking and interpersonal communication is required.
  • Practical experience sufficient to teach at a university level is required.

Job Duties

  1. Teach undergraduate communication courses, including SPCH 1315 Public Speaking and SPCH 1318 Interpersonal Communication. Teaching will primarily be face to face.
  2. Teach five courses per semester; a reduced teaching load is possible under certain circumstances.
  3. Engage in service to the department, college or university, including committee work and promoting courses, majors, minors and certificates.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a full-time, nine-month, faculty position responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the chair.

QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in the field in which the individual will be teaching is required.
Practical experience sufficient to teach at the university level, through teaching or profession, is required. Experience teaching at the university level is preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs an equivalent of thirty teaching load credits (TLC) for the combined fall and spring semesters; reduction of teaching load through reassignment of duties is possible under certain circumstances.
  2. May conduct supplemental instructional activities such as independent studies, internships, and advising.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Provides services to the university and the profession and engages in research/scholarly/creative activities.
  2. May supervise the work of student and/or graduate assistants.
  3. May serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
  4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge and practical experience in the field in which the individual will be teaching.
  2. Ability to effectively teach undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  3. Ability to work within a collaborative faculty environment.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  5. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
