Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Elizabeth City State University provides a challenging and supportive environment for all students engaged in artistic expression. A regional center for teaching excellence, intellectual stimulation, and cultural offerings, the department offers programs that serve the greater community both on and off campus. While also supporting the University’s general education core, the department provides a well-rounded curriculum – one that enables its graduates to pursue advanced study and/or professional careers in the arts. The department offers degrees in Graphic Design and Music with concentrations in (general) music, composition, performance, music business, sound recording technology and Music Education Licensure. The music program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Description of Work

The primary purpose of the position is to direct and/or coordinate all ensembles associated with the Marching Band, including but not limited to: Marching Band, Color Guard, Drum Line and Pep Band. Duties may also include teaching classes such as Concert Band, music literature, conducting, or other courses based on area of expertise or departmental needs.

Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position

A Master’s degree in music or Music Education required. A DMA /PhD/ EDD or equivalent preferred with excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability and interest in working in a collegial and mutually supportive environment. Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups associated with a university band program, including students, faculty, university administration, alumni and community members. Demonstrate the ability to forge strong relationships with local and regional high school band directors. For tenure-track appointments, a terminal degree and a record of scholarly and/or creative research are required. Degrees must be received from regionally accredited institutions.

A Master’s degree is required.
