Lecturer in Music – Piano / Director of Longwood Center for Community Music (F0050)
Job Description:
The Department of Music in the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences is seeking a full-time, non-tenure-track renewable position (F0050) at the rank of Lecturer beginning in January 2026. Reporting to the Department of Music, this individual will also be responsible for directing the Longwood Center for Community Music (LCCM). Started in 2016, the LCCM offers quality music instruction through group classes and private instruction. The LCCM believes in fostering creativity and musical growth in students of all ages through multi-sensory learning and performance. They specialize in piano, strings, and early childhood music education and support the Heart of VA Community Band.
This individual will be responsible for the equivalent of 15 credit hours of teaching per semester to be comprised of the following professional responsibilities:
- Direct and carry out administrative duties related to the Longwood Center for Community Music, including determining instructors for courses, organizing student internships, fundraising, marketing, and budget management.
- Teach music classes and private lessons at the pre-college level.
- Teach applied lessons in piano for college music majors, minors, and non-music majors.
- Teach college music theory classes, and piano-related courses as assigned by chair.
- Serve as accompanist to choir(s).
- In addition to the primary responsibility of innovative undergraduate teaching, faculty are expected to mentor students in the major, collaborate with colleagues, engage in appropriate committee work, attend university and departmental events, and recruit new students.
This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University’s campus.
Requirements:
- The successful candidate must have earned a Master's Degree in Music by January 2026; Doctorate in music preferred.
- Experience conducting community music classes and working with children required.
- Minimum of 18 graduate credits earned in an applied area of study.
- Preference will be given to candidates whose general teaching credentials best complement the expertise of current music faculty.
- Candidates must demonstrate commitment to student recruitment and the development of relationships with community members.
- A demonstrated ability and commitment to working with diverse populations and perspectives of students, faculty, and staff in support of the university mission is preferred.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, non-tenure-track instructional faculty position. Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience. A successful fingerprint-based criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
