Position overview
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment. See the following table for the current salary scale. A reasonable salary estimate for full-time Lecturer positions is $70,977 - $82,284.
Percent time: Positions range from 33% to 100%. Summer positions are 11% (weighed at 50%).
Anticipated start: Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester). Summer appointments begin in late May and run into early August.
Review timeline: Typically, appointments for summer and Fall semester are reviewed in February/March, and appointments for Spring semester in October/November. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.
Position duration: Appointments are made on a semester-by-semester or academic year basis. Summer appointments range between 6-10 weeks, depending on session.

Position description
The Department of German at UC Berkeley, in collaboration with Center for Jewish Studies, seeks applications for a pool of qualified lecturers to teach Yiddish courses in any of the possible areas:
- Yiddish language courses (of various levels)
- Upper-level literature/culture courses in such areas as history of Yiddish culture, contemporary Yiddish culture, and related topics
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g. syllabus), maintaining a course website, and using a learning management system (e.g. bCourses at UC Berkeley, Canvas, etc.).
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Master's degree or equivalent international degree
Preferred qualifications
- Native or near-native fluency in Yiddish and English.
- College level teaching experience in the U.S.
- For language instruction: Demonstrated excellence in teaching, familiarity with college-level language programs, and relevant teaching experience using current language-teaching methodologies.
- For literature/culture instruction: Demonstrated expertise in Yiddish language, literature, and culture, with possible emphasis in Yiddish film, Yiddish-language political and social history, and related topics.
