Clemson University: College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences: School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences

Location: LOWRY HALL

Open Date: Jul 01, 2025

Description

The Glenn Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a teaching track faculty member to teach classes in civil engineering professional formation including technical communication (written, oral, and visual), ethics, and teamwork. The lecturer will be responsible for team-teaching sophomore design classes (which may take the form of serving as a rotating professional formation expert across selected courses), teaching professional seminar, and assisting with the professional formation components of our senior-level studio and keystone classes. This will include attending team meetings, developing professional formation course materials around technical project scopes, delivering courses, providing feedback, attending presentations, and ensuring data capture for assessment. Team teaching experience and experience working with student teams would be ideal. In addition, the position will require significant outreach with alumni and industry partners. This position will support ABET and GAPS assessments to realize the necessary professional formation components of those evaluations. Service to the department and profession will include scholarship of teaching and learning, mentoring of students, faculty and staff development programming, and continuous improvement of academic programs. Additional job duties may include committee assignments, student advising, and support of student organizations (e.g. ITE, ASCE). Clemson University recently created the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences (SCEEES) that houses the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences. SCEEES is home to over 60 faculty, 200 graduate students, and 600 undergraduates. The School has an established and growing expertise in the following four thematic areas: Smart City Service (managing risk and security); Resilient Communities (natural and technological disasters mitigation); Engineering the Surface and Subsurface (dry land, clean water, and water security); and Engineering the Earth's Ecosphere (air quality, greenhouse gas removal, managing solid and nuclear wastes). Further, the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering has recently completed a 6-year grant from the National Science Foundation to revolution our engineering department. This grant has resulted in deeper connections between students, faculty and industry, as well as engagement with the community on impactful projects, and created significant improvements in student professional development outcomes. This is a full-time, 9-month non-tenure track academic faculty position with a combination of teaching, implementation of evidence-based scholarship on teaching and learning, and assessment responsibilities, and/or service requirements. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to teaching and mentoring of students, faculty development, and continuous improvement of academic programs.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a postgraduate degree in a relevant STEM, Education, or Professional Formation field, an understanding of current trends in civil engineering education, an ability to implement evidence-based scholarship on teaching and learning, and maintain expertise in assessment of learning. The ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level professional formation courses is required. Prior experience in team teaching, working with student teams, and assessment would be ideal. A minimum of one year experience is required. Preferred Qualifications A doctoral degree in a relevant STEM, Education, or Professional Formation field is a plus. Civil Engineering, Communications, and Education are preferred areas of education. Multiple years of teaching experience and multiple course developments are preferred.
