The Opera Coach will provide high-level musical preparation and coaching for the Department's opera activities, including individual vocal coaching, mainstage production preparation, and Opera Workshop support.

  • Weekly vocal coaching for advanced undergraduate and graduate singers
  • Lead the musical preparation of the Winter 2027 mainstage opera: create and distribute the weekly musical schedule, assign pianist/coach GSIs to rehearsals and coachings, lead the musical rehearsals in the main rehearsal room and prepare the cast for musical run-throughs with the maestro. Provide diction notes to singers in subsequent milestone rehearsals.
  • Opera Workshop: co-teach (with opera stage director) and/or musically support one or more sections of Opera Workshop (OPERA 239, OPERA 240, OPERA 451/551, etc.)

Master's degree in collaborative piano.

  • At least one year of experience as a coach in a competitive young-artist or apprentice-coach program at a professional opera company or major summer festival
  • Foundational experience coaching singers on diction, style, and musical preparation in major operatic languages (Italian, German, French; additional languages a plus), with broad familiarity with standard opera and classical vocal repertoire.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting and leading musical rehearsals.
  • Strong organizational skills for rehearsal scheduling and coordination, and effective communication and collaboration skills with singers, directors, conductors, and production staff.
  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends during production periods.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
