FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Librarian Coordinator for Special Academic Programs and Outreach will serve as the formal contact person between the library and special academic programs. The coordinator will report directly to the Chief Librarian and will be responsible for monitoring and improving the library’s impact on the academic programs’ student learning and success.

Hostos Community College has several special academic programs that address a variety of student needs. Examples include College Now, College Discovery, CUNY Start, CUNY Math, CUNY English, CLIP, ASAP, middle and high school programs. The primary role of the Coordinator is to foster communication between the library and the college’s academic programs. The individual is expected to understand the information needs of each program and to represent those needs in appropriate forums within the library. At the same time, the Coordinator is expected to be fully knowledgeable about library resources, services, and technologies so as to represent these key resources effectively to the academic program constituents.

As the Coordinator for Outreach, the individual will bolster library engagement through programming and promoting library services to the Hostos campus community in support of student success and retention.

The Librarian Coordinator will collaborate with teaching faculty, library staff and others in the design and delivery of program support that makes a direct and positive impact on students’ academic success and learning outcomes.

Reporting directly to the Chief Librarian, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

Academic Programs responsibilities

  • Provide leadership which includes planning, assessment and management of projects to ensure that library resources and services effectively support campus-wide curricular initiatives and priorities.
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty and program directors across campus to ensure that the library provides access to resources and services required for program coursework and other requirements.
  • Within the Library department, participate in reference, instruction and collection development.
  • Utilize information and educational technology to provide outstanding customer service to students and faculty.
  • Identify and respond to trends, sharing perspective and knowledge about how the campus, programs, curricula and student learning outcomes are changing.

Outreach responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities, coordinate, implement, and evaluate effectiveness of library outreach initiatives and programming.
  • Coordinate campus-wide library outreach programming and engagement (First Year Seminar, Summer Bridge, etc.).
  • Coordinate external community outreach programming and engagement (e.g. New York Public Library).
  • Participate in campus-wide events (e.g. welcome events, tours, etc.) that promote academic support services.
  • Collect and maintain records of outreach data for reporting purposes.
  • Create and distribute print and digital marketing materials.
  • Coordinate library displays.
  • Manage social media accounts.
  • Serve as editor/manager of Escriba/Write, the Hostos student literary and art journal.
  • Essential duties require on-campus presence.

QUALIFICATIONS

All titles require a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

For appointment as Assistant Professor, a second graduate degree is required; If appointed as Instructor, the candidate will be expected to complete an additional graduate degree within 5 years (CUNY tuition remission is available).

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Minimum two years’ experience in library public service in academic or school library.
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment with strong commitment to public service.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching information literacy/fluency infused classes.
  • Experience in reference and/or instructional consultation services.
  • Knowledge of academic library resources and services.
  • Knowledge of best practices and current issues in librarianship, first-year students, diversity, retention and higher education.
  • Demonstrated record of success working within or providing services for diverse groups.
  • Ability to work with teaching faculty and program directors across disciplines.
  • Expertise in learning theory, pedagogical methods, and learning outcomes assessment.
  • Knowledge and experience with lesson building software (Captivate, Jing, Camtasia, etc.), course management systems (BrightSpace), graphic design tools and other web-applicable instructional tools.
  • Availability to work weekend and evening hours.

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with education and experience as follows:

Instructor: $74,166 - $79,061

Assistant Professor: $73,469 - $79,598
