SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director for First-Generation Student Success oversees the administration of programs aimed at supporting first-generation students through coaching, resource provision, collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and fostering a sense of community. Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Access & Success in the Division of Student Affairs, the Assistant Director will be responsible for coaching students on various aspects of university life, collaborating with departments and organizations, identifying and addressing barriers for first-gen students, developing tailored resources, leading department initiatives and assessments, providing strategic direction, and supporting the recruitment and retention of first-generation students.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coach and support first-gen students involved in first-generation student success programming, as well as incoming and continuing first-gen students. Coaching should include providing resources for financial aid and scholarships, study strategies, registration, connecting to other offices on campus, and other resources as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments, faculty, and external organizations to create a supportive network
  • Serve as a resource for students, specifically, working toward identifying barriers for first-generation students  
  • Identify and develop resources, such as financial aid information, study skills workshops, and other support materials, specifically tailored to the needs of first-generation students.
  • Foster a sense of community among the students, faculty and staff by creating spaces for them to connect, share experiences, and support each other.
  • Lead specific department initiatives and associated assessment efforts related to the ongoing development and maintenance of comprehensive resources supporting first-gen students.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction in the areas that advance information building, policy, advocacy and success for first-gen students
  • Identify and apply for funding opportunities that support first-generation student success.
  • Remain current and trained on best practices, emerging strategies and interventions, and research at the local, state, federal levels, supporting the recruitment, retention, persistence, and graduation of first-generation students.
  • Manage departmental budget
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education / Experience: Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Six years of related experience working with student success, retention programs, and student affairs.
  • Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends. Ability to travel.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree

Bilingual Spanish

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

Supervises student workers and graduate assistants
