Library Technical Assistant
Job Description
Basic Functions
Under direction, provides a variety of technical library assistance and information to students and staff with responsibility for an assigned area such as circulation, technical processing, and periodicals; maintains student, faculty, District staff and community member accounts; oversees the inter library loans program; and performs related duties as assigned.
This position is full-time, 12-month, $60,576 annually (Range 20 of the Classified Salary Schedule). Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) position status is non-exempt. The current hours are Monday through Thursday, 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some possible weekends. Hours may change based on student or departmental needs.
Employee benefits include: District paid medical, dental and vision insurance for the employee and dependents; District paid $50,000 life insurance policy for the employee; Participation in CalPERS, 20 paid holidays, 12 paid sick days and 12 paid vacation days (annual accrual increases per years of service up to a max of 22 days per year).
Representative Duties
Examples of typical job functions include performing technical duties in support of the library program such as circulation, technical processing, and periodicals; checking materials out to users; conducting research and answering questions at the circulation desk; maintaining accounts for overdue materials and unpaid bills; providing technical support for materials reservation; coordinating circulation control of books and other materials; creating requisitions for purchases; monitoring book repair; assisting other staff and training student workers; collecting library statistics; and monitoring group-study rooms.
Requirements
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by college-level coursework or specialized training in library services. Experience: Two (2) years of experience providing technical support to a library program in an automated library environment. Licenses: None.
Physical Demands: Mobility to work in an office setting, lift up to 25 pounds, etc. Environmental Conditions: Office environment with moderate noise.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of library operations, technical processes, Library of Congress Classification System, record keeping, cash handling, and customer service techniques. Ability to provide technical library assistance, process materials, assist users, prioritize work, maintain files, generate reports, train staff, and communicate effectively.
