Born Digital Archivist
The Born-Digital Archivist will develop the born-digital archives program by creating workflows, policies, and training modules for the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts and the University Archives, with the goal of efficiently and responsibly stewarding all born-digital archival content. The born-digital archivist will process born-digital, analog, and hybrid collections held by the Kislak Center, the University Archives and the Katz Center.
Job Responsibilities:
- Manage and grow the born-digital processing program, from acquisition to access, establishing or enhancing policies, workflows, and manuals to process specific media types, and for hardware and software.
- Continually enhance and update training modules and train all processing archivists to process born-digital materials.
- Organize and attend training sessions for digital archival tools and tasks.
- Supervise interns, students, and project staff, when needed.
- Process archival collections (analog, hybrid, and born-digital).
- Work with curators and donors to acquire collections containing born-digital material.
- Work within the wider Penn Libraries and archival community to educate and provide guidance.
- Write blog posts and participate in activities to promote collections.
- Integrate the Record Center's e-records workflow into Penn Libraries born-digital program.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Master of Science, Master of Arts, and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- An accredited master's degree in library and information science, with a concentration in archives preferred.
- Experience using or administrating Archivematica, ArchivesSpace, and BitCurator.
- Experience using the Forensic Recovery of Evidence Device (FRED) machine.
- Knowledge of relevant standards for archival description and preservation.
- Knowledge of copyright, donor restrictions, and permissions.
- Knowledge of techniques and technologies for recovering data from physical media.
- A minimum of 3-5 years' experience processing analog archival collections.
- Fluency with Microsoft Office software, in particular Excel.
- The ability to work both independently and with others.
- Willingness to promote collection material through social media and events.
- Knowledge of MARC and Alma.
- Demonstrated problem-solving.
- Evidence of high level of initiative and self-motivation.
