Maintenance Worker 1
SUMMARY: Reporting to the Crew Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker I maintains and improves the condition of campus spaces and curbside locations by performing routine manual work. This position also delivers appliances, mattresses, furniture and equipment to various locations throughout campus.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collects refuse and recycling from interior and exterior campus spaces and at curbside locations.
- Performs set-ups for University-sponsored events including, but not limited to: Athletic Events, Convocations and Commencement Ceremonies, Open Houses, Homecoming, Board of Trustees Meetings, Red Hawk Days, and other special events.
- Moves furniture and equipment; bunks and de-bunks beds in University buildings as directed by the Work Order System.
- Removes and discards broken appliances, mattresses, furniture and equipment.
- Provides additional classroom tables and chairs in University buildings.
- Responds to emergencies in a timely and professional manner. Treats customers with patience and respect.
- Operates motor vehicles such as box truck, pickup truck, and a forklift; operates moving equipment such as a dolly and a hand truck.
- Assists with snow removal on campus.
- Attends and participates in department mandated trainings and meetings.
- Follows safety procedures described in training sessions, including use of personal protection equipment.
- Prepares simple reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- One (1) year of experience in general maintenance and repair work involving a variety of carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, masonry, and/or related tasks, or in the maintenance of forests and/or parks.
- A valid New Jersey driver’s license.
- Ability to work all shifts, overtime and holidays as assigned.
- Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse population.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to work during all emergencies including but not limited to New Jersey State of Emergencies.
PREFERRED:
- Professional experience as a mover in a large facility or campus environment.
- A valid fork lift operator certificate or ability to obtain a certificate within 4 months of employment.
- A high school diploma or equivalency.
- Ability to lift and move 75 pounds on regular basis.
