Summary:
Quantitative Support is seeking American University students to join our tutoring team for the fall 2026 semester. Tutoring positions will start the week of September 7 and continue through December 11, 2026. Positions are for a semester. Tutors will provide quantitative tutoring and/or statistical software support to their peers.
The types of tutoring positions available are as follows. Mathematics tutoring positions focus on assistance to students taking MATH-155 through MATH-222. Applicants to work in these positions must have successfully completed a minimum of three semesters of calculus. Statistics tutoring positions focus on assistance to students taking STAT-160 – STAT-302/320. Applicants to work in these positions must have completed at least two statistics courses (STAT-202 and an intermediate-level course). Online Statistical Software Support: Candidates for software support positions should be proficient in using one or more of the following: Excel, Python, R, SAS, SPSS, SQL, Stata, or StatCrunch.
In addition to focusing on the above courses, the Quantitative Tutoring Lab supports DATA-412/612.
Some candidates may be qualified to tutor in mathematics, statistics, data science, and statistical software support.
Essential Functions:
- Arrive on time for shifts.
- Greet students warmly upon arrival at the Tutoring Lab or at the beginning of an Online Statistical Software Support session.
- For in-person tutoring: assist AU students in understanding quantitative concepts, applying those concepts in their coursework, and preparing for related exams.
- Additionally, in-person tutors should remind students to use the lab check-in/out program and to submit a tutoring evaluation.
- For Statistical Software Support: guide students in using the above AU-supported statistical software and interpreting results from those platforms.
- Moreover, online tutors should remind students to submit a tutoring evaluation.
- Arrange shift coverage in cases of anticipated lateness or absence.
- Submit biweekly timesheets in a timely manner.
- Promote the Quantitative Tutoring Lab and Online Statistical Software Support at University events during shifts.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
- Part-time.
- 10 hours per week.
Salary Range:
- $18.40 - $22.50 per hour.
Required Education and Experience:
- Enrolled in a mathematics, statistics, data science, or other quantitative-related course during the fall 2026 semester.
- Student must have an active Federal Work Study (FWS) award.
- Strong academic achievement in relevant coursework and/or statistical software.
- Experience in collaborating well with peers and a passion for helping them succeed.
- A faculty letter of recommendation.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
- During fall semesters, tutors typically work a set schedule of between two and fifteen hours per week, depending on their availability and the needs of students and Quantitative Support.
- Tutoring positions are open to both undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students.
