Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.
Major/Essential Functions
- Testing the central hypothesis is that ATRA depletion induces oxidative stress and loss of transcriptional control of RAR-sensitive genes in DG cell types, which can be accelerated or delayed by bidirectionally manipulating DG ATRA levels through 3 specific aims.
- Oversight and coordination of the mouse colony coordination of breeding; genotyping; interfacing with Laboratory Animal Resource Center veterinary technicians and the attending veterinarian; keeping other lab members abreast of mouse availability and helping to plan experiments.
- Composing, writing and proofing oral and poster presentations, peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews, and grant applications
- Serving as a user for confocal microscopic, histological, immunocytochemical, and molecular biological equipment within the group
- Laboratory administration (lab safety, protocol creation/maintenance, orderliness and reporting); provide logistical support for graduate student scientists and other lab personnel.
