Beginning August 1, 2026. Full-time. Nine-month appointment.

Duties:

Teach musicology courses for music majors, music Masters students, and for the wider university population. Actively contribute to the research profile of the College and the University. Participate in service activities as appropriate to rank.

• Develop new, introductory-level, large-volume, online course on an innovative topic, appealing to undergraduates, including non-majors, that complements current offerings.
• Teach undergraduate core courses in historical musicology/ethnomusicology, depending on areas of specialization.
• Teach special topics seminars in areas of expertise or as needed by the College, for upper-level undergraduate and Masters students in music.
• Supervise Masters theses in Musicology and participate in Masters-level committees.

University of Tennessee’s musicology unit within the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music is an integrated program in historical musicology and ethnomusicology. Teaching and research approaches that blend these methodologies and that encourage interdisciplinary thinking are welcome. Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, or appropriate allied discipline, required by time of appointment.
• Demonstrated success in college-level teaching, with ability to foster students' critical thinking and academic writing.
• Facility in teaching music of various cultures or style periods.
• Facility in teaching methods that foster student learning in both in-person and online modalities.
• Active research profile appropriate to rank.
• Appropriate professional experience in academic service for rank.

Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor must:

• Meet the qualifications for being an Assistant Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the NLH College of Music bylaws; these are covered in the above Required Qualifications.

Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor must:

• Meet the qualifications for being an Associate Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the NLH College of Music bylaws; these qualifications normally include having served as an assistant professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.

Candidates for the rank of Full Professor must:

• Meet the qualifications for being a Full Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the NLH College of Music bylaws; these qualifications normally include having served as an associate professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Expertise in topics that complement strengths of the existing faculty
• Innovative approaches to online teaching and demonstrated expertise with learner-centric virtual class design
• Teaching and research areas that invite interdisciplinary participation
• Teaching abilities in a non-canonical or non-western music performance area.
