Position Description
Provides primary care as part of a health care team in a hospital setting in the Neonatal ICU. Provides patient education and counseling as well as physical assessment. May participate in teaching programs for students and other student residents. Work is performed under usual NICU conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals. Some positions in the classification require participation in educational efforts and special programs that occur outside of normal working hours.
Major/Essential Functions
- Provide patient care management in collaboration with attending physicians in a Level-III NICU at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
- Educate, counsel, and support families by explaining diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognoses, while guiding them through discharge planning and ongoing care needs.
- Perform advanced neonatal procedures such as intubation, umbilical and central line placement, chest tube insertion, and neonatal resuscitation.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests, lab results, and imaging to inform treatment decisions.
- Prescribe medications to treat a variety of newborn conditions, including prematurity, congenital heart defects, respiratory distress, and chromosomal abnormalities.
- Coordinate and manage safe discharge planning and follow-up care.
- Attend high-risk deliveries
- Attend transports for high acuity patients.
- Mentor and teach students and residents.
- Flexibility with scheduling of shifts to meet requirements and work-life balance.
- Opportunity to earn additional compensation for covering an additional shift.
Required Qualifications
Education: Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program.
License/Certification: Current RN license in the State of Texas or have the ability to transfer your license to Texas. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the appropriate nursing specialty from an approved certification program as recognized by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners. Recognition by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners as an Advance Practitioner.
