Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant, Clinical Instructor, Pediatrics, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
The Department of Pediatrics in Stony Brook Children’s Hospital seeks faculty for the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the Clinical Instructor level.
The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will join physician faculty of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Stony Brook Children's Hospital to provide direct care to patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in collaboration with an Attending Intensivist. The NP/PA will also be responsible for organizing the Pediatric Special Procedures (PSP) intake and recovery area and managing patients undergoing procedural sedation or general anesthesia and IV infusions of biologics and other medications.
The NP/PA will be responsible for the following:
- Provide coverage with most shifts being weekday plus, on average, one weekend shift and one-week night shift a month.
- Provide comprehensive care to patients on the Pediatric ICU at Stony Brook Children’s in collaboration with an Attending Intensivist.
- Comprehensive PICU care will include obtaining patient admission medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering medications, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures, and discharging patients with complete, comprehensive discharge plans.
- Provide care to patients on the PSP at Stony Brook Children’s in collaboration with Attending Physicians including Intensivists, Anesthesiologists, and Pediatric Subspecialists.
- Comprehensive care of patients in the PSP will include obtaining procedural consent for sedation, prescribing medications for relief of pain and motionless procedures, recovery of patients from sedation and anesthesia, monitoring of patients during intravenous infusions, managing patients during IV infusions and responding to adverse events, and communicating with ordering physicians.
- Other responsibilities will include: providing education to staff PICU and PSP nurses; conferring with patients to obtain accurate information for records, explain procedures, ally fears and elicit cooperation, and engagement in plan of care; ensuring execution of provider established plan of care including but not limited to medicine reconciliations, diagnostic follow up visits and specialist consultations, lab, imaging studies and/or procedures; contributing to patient care through patient and family education, population health management, encouraging patient self-management, distributing resource literature and community service recommendations and referrals as needed; maintaining liaison with physicians and practice administration to ensure efficient and effective patient care.

This is a faculty academic position at the Clinical Instructor level. Individuals will be selected on the basis of their training, clinical experience, research potential, and their commitment to teaching. Faculty appointment will be commensurate with qualifications.
Required Qualifications:
Nurse Practitioner: New York State Licensure as a Nurse Practitioner. DNP or Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Nursing, or completion of a course for a Nurse Practitioner, and certification as a Family or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Minimum of one year of clinical experience working in Pediatrics and acute care certification required.
Physician Assistant: New York State Physician Assistant License and NCCPA certification as a Physician Assistant; Bachelor of Science (foreign equivalent or higher) for Physician Assistant with graduation from an ARC-PA accredited program. Minimum of one year of clinical experience working in Pediatrics and with complex patients required.
Preferred Qualifications: Three or more years of clinical experience working in Pediatrics and critical care certification preferred.
