Nursing Director of Quality, Safety, and Evidence-Based Practice
Job Summary
The Nursing Director of Quality, Safety, and Evidence-Based Practice is responsible for leading and overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement, patient safety, evidence-based practice, and corporate credentialing best practices within the nursing enterprise. This role ensures that nursing practices are aligned with the latest research and best practices to enhance patient outcomes and safety. Provides leadership and direction with a variety of programs and initiatives identified in the Nursing Strategic Plan. The Director demonstrates advanced leadership and communication skills and the ability to manage and successfully mediate conflict, while upholding the organization's commitment to core values, productivity, and quality across the nursing enterprise.
Key Responsibilities:
- 65% Quality, Performance Improvement, and Patient Safety
- Develop, implement, and Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and outcomes utilizing performance improvement methodology such as LEAN/Six Sigma.
- Monitor and analyze quality metrics and performance data to identify areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement evidence-based protocols and guidelines.
- Possess competence with predictive modeling and risk adjusted models to drive practice change.
- Utilize data-driven approaches to identify and address performance gaps.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the nursing department.
- Lead patient safety initiatives to reduce adverse events and improve patient outcomes.
- Conduct root cause analyses and develop action plans to address safety concerns in cooperation with the Quality and Safety team.
- Promote a culture of safety within the nursing department through education and training.
- Facilitate the integration of evidence-based practice into clinical decision-making.
- Provide education and training to nursing staff on evidence-based practice principles and methodologies.
- Collaborate with nurse scientists and researchers to conduct and disseminate research findings into practice.
- 30% Leadership, Collaboration, and Communication:
- Provide leadership and direction to nursing staff in the areas of quality, safety, and evidence-based practice.
- Provide leadership to the Patient Education Department.
- Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to promote interdisciplinary approaches to quality and safety.
- Serve as a mentor and resource for nursing staff in the areas of quality improvement and evidence-based practice. Work closely with senior leadership to align quality and safety initiatives with organizational priorities.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels to promote transparency and accountability.
- Represent the nursing department in quality and safety committees and workgroups.
- Support the nursing and organizations strategic plans to improve clinical quality and patient safety.
- Align departmental goals with the organization's mission and vision.
- Participate in the development of organizational policies and procedures related to quality and safety.
- Mentor and Coach staff at all levels.
- 5% Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards related to quality and patient safety including Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and submit reports to regulatory agencies as required.
- Stay current with changes in regulations and standards and update policies and procedures accordingly.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Nursing or related field required; Doctorate preferred.
- Current RN license.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in nursing leadership, quality improvement, and patient safety.
- Holds a current certification in nursing administration or area of clinical expertise; or certification must be achieved within the timeline of eligibility.
- Strong knowledge of evidence-based practice principles and methodologies.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in quality improvement, patient safety, or evidence-based practice. Examples: LEAN, Six Sigma, Fuld EBP, or others
- Experience in conducting and disseminating nursing research.
