NURSING SUPERVISOR (10 East Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)

Unit Description

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 30-bed monitored ICU located on the 10th floor of the new C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. The unit is multi-acuity ranging from critically ill to short stay observation. Multidisciplinary care is provided for children from newborn to young adult in partnership with Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Hematology/Oncology, BMT, Nephrology, Transplant Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiology. State of the art technology including ECMO, Nitric Oxide, High Frequency Ventilation, and CRRT are used in the care of patients in the PICU patients. Family centered care including family presence during physician rounds, nursing report, and parent spending the night with their child is supported and encouraged. PICU participates in the NACHRI collaborative to improve quality of care and outcomes.

Job Summary

To assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning and management of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the provision of patient care. To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research. To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Health’s mission and goal statements. Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel. Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.

Responsibilities

Personnel Management:

  • Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
  • Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
  • Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.

Clinical Practice:

  • Cover night shift with rotation to day / evening shifts as determined by staffing needs and the Clinical Nursing Director.
  • Shift times require flexibility to the needs of the unit as responsibilities include providing clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff on all shifts.

Management of Clinical Area:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
  • Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
  • Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
  • Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
  • Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
  • Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Educational Nurse Coordinator to implement competency-based evaluation.
  • Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Director and Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance and Research:

  • Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
  • Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable

Expectations of the Role

CERTIFICATION:

  • Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program® and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.) See full list here.

  • Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer data bases.

Required Educational Requirements:

Applicant must meet one of the following:
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
* Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing.

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum five (5) years RN experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in clinical area of Pediatric Intensive Care.
  • Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including charge nurse, team leader, advancement in professional development framework, or other management/leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science Nursing.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
  • Minimum 2 years current clinical experience.
  • Experience within the last two years of ICU and/or Pediatric ICU/Pediatric Cardiac ICU experience.
  • Consultative and teaching skills

Additional Details

Hours/Week: 40 hours
Days/Shift/Hours: Night shift, combination of 8, 10, 12 hour shifts.
The expected staffing component is 30%.
