Open-Rank Professor of Black Studies
Open-Rank, Tenure-Track/Tenured, Faculty Position in Black Studies
The Black Studies Department at Providence College invites applications for a full-time open-rank, tenure-track, faculty position, with consideration for appointment with tenure, beginning August 2026. Our Black Studies Department is growing following our recent elevation from a program to departmental status. Potential applicants should have a deep commitment to mentoring undergraduates and supporting the student-led development of the department. We have a strong preference for candidates who are committed to publicly engaged scholarship, student-centered pedagogical and mentoring practices, and supporting the success of students from historically marginalized economic, social, and cultural groups.
We invite applicants with a Ph.D. in hand in Black Studies, Africana Studies, African Studies, or any associated discipline with a focus on the interdisciplinary study of African-descended people, anti-Black racism, racial justice, or collective forms of resistance to racism and its intersections with other systems of oppression. We are open to scholars whose geographic focus is the U.S., or elsewhere in the Americas, Europe, the Atlantic World, the Pacific World, and/or Africa, or whose work is transnational or comparative in nature. Given the interdisciplinary nature of our department, applicants from any subfield of Black Studies are welcome to apply. We are particularly interested in the Black radical tradition; Black Studies research methodologies; Black theater arts and performance studies; Black spirituality and religious practice; and Black politics, public policy, and public opinion. The standard course load at the college is 9 credits per semester.
There are multiple opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching, including courses that meet Core Curriculum requirements such as the proficiency in Cross-Cultural Understanding/Diversity; colloquia on race and racism in the Development of Western Civilization Program, and courses cross listed with other relevant programs such as English, History, Sociology and Anthropology, American Studies, Education, Social Work, Political Science, Women's and Gender Studies, Public and Community Service, and Health Policy and Management.
Applicants should apply online using the College's career site at https://careers.providence.edu and submit a cover letter, curriculum vita, teaching statement and evidence of teaching effectiveness, a statement on how the candidate would approach the teaching of the Introduction to Black Studies course, a graduate transcript, and three letters of recommendation. For additional information, please contact Dr. Eric Hirsch, search chair, at ehirsch@providence.edu. To ensure full consideration, please submit all application materials by February 1, 2026. Applications will however be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Salary range: $75,000 - $125,000.
