Purpose of Position

The Department of
Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a 9-month Open Rank Teaching Professor position to support
the Aerospace Engineering program. Depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications, the position will be offered at the rank of
Teaching Assistant Professor, Teaching Associate Professor, or Teaching Professor.

The department will consider applications in the
general area of aerospace and mechanical engineering with the ability to teach all required undergraduate courses in aerospace
engineering.

The appointment is expected to begin on August 16, 2026, or later.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful applicant must have demonstrated dedication to excellence in
engineering education. The successful applicant will have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. The successful applicant will
have the following primary responsibilities and duties:

  • Develop & teach aerospace engineering courses with these topics in
    sufficient depth for engineering practice:
    • (1) aerospace engineering design
    • (2) experimental aeromechanics, and/or
    • (3) aerospace structures.
  • Teach at least 3/3 course load (for Fall/Spring) in aerospace and mechanical
    engineering.
  • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in aerospace engineering, both on-campus and online, including both
    classroom and laboratory settings.
  • Perform tasks for the Aerospace Engineering program ABET accreditation.
  • Advise
    students in course planning and fulfilling graduation requirements.
  • Communicate effectively in the English language with students,
    families, faculty, staff, and other professional colleagues in person and at a distance.
  • Contribute service within the department,
    college, university, and professional community.

Required
Competencies

  • Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery.
  • Broad
    knowledge of emerging aerospace engineering needs.
  • Broad knowledge of academic and commercial developments that are relevant to
    aerospace engineering.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to teach, inspire, and
    mentor students.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and
    students
  • Ability to work and engage with diverse groups.
  • Ability to advise student competition teams, e.g., (1) AIAA
    Design/Build/Fly, (2) International Rocketry Engineering Competition (IREC), and/or (3) NASA Student Launch.
  • Ability to develop
    and teach graduate-level aerospace engineering courses.

Minimum
Requirements

  • PhD degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering education, or a closely
    related discipline.
  • Teaching experience in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

hire. This position does not support visa sponsorship for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in teaching undergraduate
    courses required in aerospace or mechanical engineering.
  • Proficient in teaching aerospace or mechanical engineering design using
    CAD, e.g., ME 101 and ME 201.
  • Proficient in teaching aerospace or mechanical engineering design by incorporating modern
    manufacturing tools, e.g., 3D printing, CNC, etc.
  • Proficient in teaching laboratory courses, e.g., AE 483 Aeromechanics Laboratory
    and ME 483 Mechanical Measurements Laboratory.
  • Proficient in teaching capstone design in aerospace engineering.
