Orientation Specialist
Job Summary
The Student Orientation Advising and Registration (SOAR) program, part of the Office of Student Transition and Family Engagement (OSTFE), includes both in-person and virtual components designed to engage every new undergraduate student. This program facilitates their introduction to campus life, academic advising, and course enrollment.
The Orientation Specialist is responsible for developing the content of the program, coordinating with campus partners, supervising student leaders, and assessing the program's effectiveness in collaboration with the OSTFE team and other key campus partners.
In this role, the Orientation Specialist will focus on enhancing the SOAR experience for new students and their families. This position will involve working with campus partners to create a comprehensive schedule for the SOAR program. Responsibilities include reserving spaces, developing the schedule, curating content for presentations, and crafting scripts. Additionally, the Orientation Specialist will oversee a team of 20 to 30 student staff members throughout the year, with the majority of them working during the summer.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Creates and maintains schedules, logistics, and resources for one or multiple student affairs programs, activities, and/or services
- Organizes student-focused programming and resources to promote new and ongoing educational initiatives
- Supervise a group of 20 to 30 students. This involves hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing their conduct and performance, discharging, assigning tasks, rewarding, disciplining, and approving work hours.
- Writes, edits, and publishes content for various communication projects and marketing platforms to align with strategic initiatives and established communication campaigns
- Generates and analyzes reports of curricular and unit outcomes
- Serves as a subject matter expert regarding student affairs to internal and external stakeholders

The Office of Student Transition and Family Engagement (OSTFE) supports the successful transition of all new undergraduate students to UW-Madison and their families. As campus leaders in student transition and family engagement, we facilitate this work through a long-term inclusive strategy of intentional programming, ongoing communications and outreach, and collaboration with campus partners.
OSTFE is part of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, led by the vice chancellor for student affairs. Our staff is dedicated to serving students and to helping them succeed in and out of the classroom in areas including health and well-being, student success and belonging, leadership and engagement, and student advocacy. Student Affairs includes departments led by the dean of students; departments that provide belonging-based spaces and leadership resources; the Wisconsin Union; University Health Services; and University Recreation and Wellbeing.
Compensation
The expected minimum starting salary for this position is $54,000.00 annually. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, competitively priced health/dental/vision/life insurance, tax-advantaged savings accounts, and participation in the nationally recognized Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension fund. Required Qualifications
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Detailed organizational skills
- Ability to manage logistics of complex programs and/or content
- Strong facilitation skills and ability to work effectively with numerous stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Experience in the development of education program content
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supervising student staff
- 1+ years of experience creating or managing student-focused programs in Higher Education or related setting
Education
Bachelor's Degree Preferred
