Position Highlights

This person will supervise the performance of Transportation Drivers to ensure program effectiveness and team consistency in providing safe and reliable transit service for the University students, staff, and community members. They will ensure program operations are conducted according to department and industry standards, and policy. The Transit Operations Coordinator supports program operations and reports improvement opportunities and concerns to the Transit Operations Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver quality, front-facing customer service to students, faculty, staff, and campus guests.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the program and team members.
  • Oversee the opening and closing of daily operations.
  • Edit routes, add alerts, ensure tracking app is working appropriately, and providing accurate information to riders.
  • Process and analyze daily vehicle inspection reports to determine route assignment and maintenance schedule.
  • Serve as the point of contact for repair shops and vendors, as well as retrieving and delivering vehicles as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling of shifts.
  • Assist in providing necessary training to new and current employees
  • Assist with covering operations by driving as needed.
  • Work cohesively with other Transportation Coordinators to ensure daily operational goals are met.
  • Monitor Transloc information for accuracy and reliability.
  • Collaborate with other Transportation Coordinators to determine appropriate reroute/detour as needed.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting tablets, maintenance, and support.
  • Ensure fleet is maintained according to department and industry standards and policy.
  • Oversee the accuracy and conditions of Cat Tran signs and stops.
  • Serve as a liaison to construction contractors and city employees.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive fleet maintenance plan for Transit Operations Manager's approval.
  • Responsible for completing fleet's annual safety inspections and emissions.
  • Collaborates with other Lead Coordinators to ensure Standard Operating Procedures
  • Performance Standards and University Policies are followed.
  • Support program operations and report improvement opportunities and improvements to Transit Operations Manager.
  • Works with Transit Operations Manager to provide feedback for team's annual Career Conversations.
  • Serve as coordinator during Special Events, including overseeing day-of football game operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge: Traffic laws, safety regulations, and defensive driving techniques. Local streets, highways, and bus routes. Basic vehicle maintenance and inspection procedures. Emergency protocols (e.g., evacuations, first aid basics, fire safety). Customer service principles and passenger interaction etiquette.

Skills: Safe and defensive driving under varying traffic and weather conditions. Performing pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections. Operating wheelchair lifts, ramps, and other accessibility equipment. Communicating clearly and courteously with passengers. Handling unexpected situations (accidents, passenger conflicts, detours). Time management to stay on schedule.

Abilities: Ability to remain calm under pressure and make quick decisions. Ability to follow established routes while adapting to unexpected changes. Ability to enforce safety rules with tact and professionalism. Ability to assist passengers with disabilities or special needs. Ability to maintain focus and alertness over long driving periods. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting/moving up to 20 pounds often.
  • Lifting/moving up to 50 pounds rarely.

Work Environment:

  • Outdoor Environment: Employees work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.
  • Extreme Heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for more than an hour.
  • Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.
  • Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals in work setting.
  • Oils: There is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • A Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Must have valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License Class A or B passenger endorsement at time of application and the ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy. Please note, this requires applicants to have been licensed for a minimum of three years PRIOR to driving in a CDL capacity on University business.
