Part-Time Digital Art Instructor (Pool)

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach day and evening sections of art with an emphasis on digital mixed media or other selected art classes, both on campus and online
  2. Design and implement a digital art laboratory for both fine art and graphic applications
  3. Develop new curriculum in digital art
  4. Modify art curriculum as needed, including student learning outcomes and assessment processes
  5. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment, and technology that will enhance the offerings of the art department
  6. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office and lab hours
  7. Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies and curricula
  8. Participate as a member of department, division, and college committees
  9. Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional needs

Employment Standards

Knowledge of:

  1. Currency in the discipline, and related technology appropriate to instruction, such as that related to digital art and information and communication technology, including the suite of Adobe programs

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Successful teaching and experience in beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of digital art
  2. Commitment to and belief in an inclusive, collaborative working style/approach to teaching, with demonstrated experience working/teaching in a flexible and collaborative team environment
  3. An active exhibition record
  4. Design, plan, and budget for a digital facility
  5. Use online tools to support instruction
  6. Develop instructional learning outcomes and develop methods for assessing students' achievement of these outcomes, as well as to ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress, and use the assessment of one's pedagogy and examine its effect critically
  7. Organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students' abilities and learning styles
  8. Use teaching methods that engage students actively in their learning, promote the development of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become lifelong learners
  9. Use instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter
  10. Teach students to create a digital portfolio of personal or professional artwork as a presentation vehicle
  11. Engage students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds
  12. Develop curriculum, both transfer-level and electives, and teach courses for an Art major program with California articulation standards
  13. Committed to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of San Mateo County Community College District
  14. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, laboratory preparations, and student success
  15. Committed to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division and college activities

Job Requirements:

  • Any bachelor's degree(s) or higher and two years of related professional experience OR any associate degree(s) and six years of related professional experience OR the equivalent (see below). Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master's degree.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom.
