Description:
Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, Hofstra University Public Safety Officers play a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position serves as a visible presence on campus, providing proactive patrols, responding to incidents and emergencies, and delivering certified first responder medical assistance. Officers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to community-oriented safety.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducts foot and vehicular patrols of campus buildings, grounds, parking lots, and adjacent areas to ensure safety and compliance with university policies.
- Responds promptly to routine service calls, safety concerns, and emergency situations including fire alarms, medical emergencies, and suspicious activity.
- Provides certified first responder-level medical assistance until emergency medical services arrive.
- Assists with campus evacuations, lockdowns, and emergency notifications as part of the university's emergency management protocols.
- Prepares clear and detailed incident reports, daily logs, and other documentation as required.
- Enforces university policies and procedures through verbal warnings, referrals, and appropriate follow-up actions.
- Offers safety escorts and assistance to members of the campus community.
- Monitors security systems, including surveillance cameras and access control systems.
- Supports special events and crowd control operations as directed.
- Serves as a liaison between the university community and law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel.
- Participates in ongoing training in de-escalation, CPR, first aid, and emergency response.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Hours:
Assigned shifts are selected by seniority as per the collective bargaining agreement. Overtime for special events may be required.
Qualifications:
- Valid driver's license required.
- Ability to maintain a NYS Security Guard License.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a New York State First Responder Certification.
- Ability to stand/walk on post for approximately 80% of assigned tour.
- Ability to lift/carry a minimum weight of twenty (20) pounds.
- Ability to walk up/down numerous flights of stairs.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and in inclement weather.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a college or university setting preferred.
- Familiarity with Jeanne Clery Act compliance and Title IX responsibilities is a plus.
