DEFINITION

Part-time/temporary faculty positions offer flexible hours and the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. As one of the largest community college districts in southern California, we offer a wide range of opportunities in transfer, general education, vocational and occupational programs. These part-time positions are as needed and applicants should live within commuting distance to Orange County.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide quality instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines.
  • Create and maintain an environment which emphasizes teaching and learning and encourages free discussion of ideas, interests and issues.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member.
  • Teach all scheduled classes.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, on-line and/or off-campus classes.
  1. This course is an introduction to costuming for the theater, television and film. Topics include but are not limited to a. Introduction to history of costume b. fabrics c. sewing d. wardrobe observations e. color coordination f. script analysis g. basic drawing
  2. Instructor will supervise students as they participate in the design and construction of costumes for Golden West College productions and work on the production wardrobe crew.
  3. Instructor must demonstrate a. an understanding of the evolution of costumes for theatrical production from script to performance b. knowledge of historical periods of fashion, character evaluations, and director/designer concepts c. knowledge of use and care of tools and equipment d. problem-solving techniques through pattern drafting, sketch interpretation, fabric calculation, and design and selection of fabrics e. skill proficiency in sewing and costume construction through practical application techniques including skill in pattern drafting f. knowledge of fabric and fiber types, their uses and qualities
  4. Written assignments for students may include the creation of character charts for each assignment, detailed character descriptions, theatrical production reviews and written exams demonstrating various aspects of costuming history and techniques.
  5. Instructor might be requested to provide costume and/or make-up design services on a show-by-show basis as an independent contractor.
  6. Assignment may include day and evening and weekend classes.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must meet one of the following qualifications under (a) through (d): a. Valid California Community College instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); b. Master's degree or Master of Fine Arts from an accredited institution in drama/theater arts/performance. c. Bachelor's degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater/performance AND a Master's degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities from an accredited institution. d. Or, possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.
  2. Evidence of a sensitivity to, understanding of, and the ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Successful course work in theater arts with an emphasis in costume design/technical theater
  2. Practical experience in theater arts with an emphasis in costume design/technical theater particularly at the professional or college level
  3. Documented significant experience teaching appropriate college level theater courses with a preferred emphasis in costume design/technical theater
  4. Exposure to, and involvement with, the professional theater and/or dance community
  5. Strong commitment to quality teaching, motivation of students, student success and academic excellence
  6. Broad knowledge of academic or occupational area, including ability to design curriculum to address a wide range of learning levels
  7. Ability to work with diverse population of students and staff
  8. Understanding of current and emerging instructional delivery technologies and the ability to integrate those technologies into the learning process as applicable
  9. A person who is innovative, ethical, enthusiastic, and collaborative

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis... This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL...

SALARY

Based on LHE (Lecture Hour Equivalent) in accordance with the current Part-Time Faculty Salary Schedule.
