PhD in Aneuploidy in Mammalian Embryos / Clinical Veterinary Embryologist
Job Summary: This position combines clinical embryology and research on embryonic aneuploidy in equine and human models. You will work as a clinical embryologist in the Reproduction Team and conduct research in the Reproductive Genetics team, focusing on the origins and consequences of embryonic aneuploidy.
Responsibilities: Clinical duties (30% of time) include supporting in vitro production and preservation of equine embryos, such as ovum pick-up, oocyte maturation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, IVF, embryo culture, cryopreservation, and thawing. Participate in a 1-in-4 on-call rotation for embryo thawing during the breeding season (March–August). Research duties involve using live imaging and single-cell sequencing to investigate post-zygotic aneuploidy in mammalian embryos, primarily equine, and developing a non-invasive PGT system. Additionally, coordinate with a multidisciplinary team, co-supervise students, and engage in teaching opportunities.
Qualifications and Requirements: Hold a Master’s degree in life sciences, veterinary science, medicine, or a related field. Have experience in developmental biology, molecular biology, and genetics, with skills in biomolecular, biochemical, and cell/tissue culture techniques. Be an excellent team player, fast learner, enthusiastic, creative, and able to communicate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required; experience in embryology and micromanipulation is advantageous.
What the Employer Offers: A six-year position (initially one year, extendable upon satisfactory progress), a working week of 36-40 hours, gross monthly salary between €2,901 and €3,707, 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment terms under the CAO NU. Access to training, supervision, and professional development through the Utrecht Graduate School of Life Sciences.
