PhD Position: Philosophy of Language and Experimental Linguistics
Are you fascinated by how we use language? Join the NWO research project ‘Commitments in Communication’ as a PhD candidate to understand commitments in communication, combining linguistic experiments with theoretical communication analysis.
By speaking, we undertake commitments, obligations to act in certain ways, through speech acts and vocabulary choices. This project addresses commitments in various linguistic phenomena and societal issues.
You will perform experiments measuring commitments using explicit and implicit judgments, including physiological measures like fEMG, combined with theoretical discourse analysis. This will result in four journal papers for a dissertation.
You will participate in conferences, workshops, and seminars, publish findings, and have a 12.5% teaching load. Opportunities for skill development are available.
Requirements: Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Philosophy or Linguistics; affinity for semantic and pragmatic research; training in physiological measures and quantitative data analysis; excellent Dutch and English skills; motivated, critical, creative, team-oriented.
