By decision of the Board of Directors, NOVA.id.FCT - Associação para a Inovação e Desenvolvimento da FCT (“NOVA.id.FCT”) opens an international call to hire a PhD Researcher, with the internal reference “#NOVAID294”, under a unfixed term employment contract to conduct research activities in the field of Materials Science in the scope of the R & D Project “GLAZE” related to operation no. 16375, with reference LISBOA2030-FEDER-00753900, funded by the Innovation and Digital Transition Programme and the Lisbon Regional Programme, under the FEDER component, and by the “Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P.”.
1. TYPE OF CONTRACT AND APPLICABLE LEGISLATION
The hiring of the PhD Researcher shall be made by means of an Unfixed Term Employment Contract entered into in accordance with the Portuguese Labour Code approved by the Law no. 7/2009 of February 12th, as amended. The contract should have a forecasted duration of 6 months, with possible extension for an identical period and should not be extended further than the project duration and its new funding contracts. The contract should begin in October 2026.
The present hiring procedure is further governed inter alia by Decree-law no. 57/2016 of July 19th, as amended by the Law no. 57/2017 of August 29th and Regulatory decree no. 11-A/2017 of December 29th.
2. PRINCIPAIS FUNÇÕES E ACTIVIDADES E EXCLUSIVIDADE / MAIN ATTRIBUTIONS AND ACTIVITIES AND EXCLUSIVITY
The PhD Researcher will carry out research activities within the scope of the project, focusing on the investigation of ceramic heritage materials, particularly Iznik tiles. The researcher will undertake their material characterisation using techniques including X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), reflectance spectroscopy, and colourimetry, among others. The researcher will also perform glaze historical reproductions. The role also includes the preparation of technical reports and scientific publications, as well as participation in dissemination and outreach activities related to the project's research outcomes.
The PhD Researcher shall fully devote the whole of his/her professional activity to NOVA.id.FCT, on an exclusive basis, unless it opts for the full-time regime, as stated in article 7.º, number 1 of Decree-Law n.º 57/2016, of 29th August, altered by Law n.º 57/2017, of 19th July.
3. PLACE OF WORK
The PhD Researcher’s working place shall be at the premises of VICARTE located in Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Campus da Caparica under the supervision of Professor Susana Coentro and Professor João Pedro Veiga. The Researcher shall travel, in Portugal or abroad, as required by his/her attributions or as necessary for his/her activity.
4. MONTHLY REMUNERATION
The PhD Researcher shall earn a monthly remuneration in the gross amount of €2.408,11 corresponding to level 33 of the TRU salary scale, pursuant to number 2 of Article 15 of DecreeLaw no. 57/2016 of 19 July, as amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 29 August, and Regulatory Decree no. 11-A / 2017, of December 29, corrected through the amendment produced by Decree-Law no. 10-B / 2020, of 20 March. The monthly remuneration will be two thirds of the abovementioned if the investigator opts for the full-time regime.
5. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants to this call may be national, foreign or stateless candidates holding a PhD degree in the field of Conservation and Restauration, or related areas, with emphasis on cultural heritage materials, of interest to the project, legally valid and/or recognized in Portugal and complying with the following specific requirements:
- Experience in the physicochemical characterisation of ceramic heritage materials, particularly historic tiles, including compositional and optical characterisation;
- Experience in the History and Techniques of Artistic Production, including the reproduction of historical glass and glaze compositions based on historical recipes.
- Experience in the participation of financed projects in the field of cultural heritage;
- Experience in the participation in outreach activities.
- fluency in the English language;
6. EVALUATION OF THE APPLICATIONS AND COMPOSITION OF THE JURY
Applications shall be subject to evaluation by a jury that shall follow the procedure established in articles 13 and 14 (by virtue of article 19) of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 19 July, as amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 29 August.
Pursuant to Article 13 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 the jury is composed of the following members: 6/10

7. SELECTION CRITERIA
The selection of the successful candidate will be carried out through the evaluation of the scientific and curricular achievements as established by Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 19 July, as amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 29 August and the selection criteria and their respective weighting shall be as follows:
1ST PHASE
A. Curriculum Vitae [35%] (0 to 20 points) – it will be analysed the scientific track record, including publications, patents, presentations, awards, participation in scientific projects and any other elements that the candidate considers to be relevant within her/his track record, having in mind the requirements and workplan defined for this call;
B. Professional experience [65%] (0 to 20 points) – it will be analysed a 2 page document highlight the scientific background of the candidate and its suitability for the present position
1ST PHASE GRADE = 35%×A + 65%×B
2ND PHASE
Candidates with the highest scores, above 16 points, will proceed to the interview phase, and the selection methods will be as follows:
A. Curriculum assessment (0 to 20 points) – 20%
B. Experience in the research area (0 to 20 points) – 50%
C. Interview (0 to 20 points) – 30%
FINAL GRADE = 20%×A+50%×B+30%xC
Candidates who do not achieve a minimum of 17 points will not be hired
8. FINAL DECISION
The final deliberation of the jury shall be homologated by the ultimate governing body of NOVA.id.FCT that is also responsible for the decision of hiring.
The list of admitted and excluded candidates and the final list of classification will be publicised on the website of NOVA.id.FCT (www.novaidfct.pt) and sent by electronic mail with receipt of delivery to all candidates.
