Basic Function

Performs law enforcement duties on all District facilities to protect the lives and property of students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors; patrols and safeguards campus facilities; prevents and detects crimes; enforces laws and ordinances; and assists the Chief of Police and Sergeants with special assignments at each District location and off-site facilities.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives general supervision from assigned area supervisor. May provide lead direction to temporary staff and/or student workers.

Class Characteristics

This classification in the Police Officer series that performs non-supervisory assignments in the District's Police Department. Incumbents are responsible for performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative.

Education

Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Experience

An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Knowledge of

• Operations and services of a public safety law enforcement department.
• Basic principles and practices of criminal law as it relates to work performed.
• Methods and techniques of conducting investigations.
• Methods and techniques of interviewing and eliciting information from victims, witnesses, and suspects.
• Court procedures in criminal and civil cases.
• Principles, practices, and methods of effective public safety and emergency response and evacuation.
• Techniques to understand geography, maps, streets, landmarks, and driving directions.
• Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, and procedures relevant to public safety operations.
• Safety practices and equipment related to police work.
• Operational characteristics and the use and care of standard police equipment, including vehicles, personal protective equipment, and firearms.
• Techniques of first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• Recordkeeping and reporting methods, techniques, and procedures.

Ability to

• Patrol assigned areas and respond quickly to requests for law enforcement services.
• Pursue, subdue, and control and/or physically restrain suspects.

Licenses/Certifications

• A valid driver's license and proof of insurability may be required to drive a District or personal vehicle.
• Graduation from a California P.O.S.T. Police Academy within the past three (3) years or possession of a current basic California P.O.S.T. certificate.
• Possession of valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificates, which must be maintained throughout employment.

Salary Range

Grade N Salary Amount: $7,043 - $8,574 Monthly
