Description
Under the direction of the Chief of Police, plan, organize and supervise the work of assigned personnel and perform a variety of technical tasks. Instruct and assist subordinates in the performance of their assigned duties such as investigation and surveillance work to detect or prevent crime.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Recommend and assist in the implementation of department goals and objectives; establish schedules, participate in the development of training materials, and implement policies and procedures.
- Interview, select and hire employees; supervise, assign, direct and schedule work activities.
- Evaluate the performance of assigned personnel; recommend promotions and rewards for service.
- Approve monthly time and attendance records and utilize automated software to schedule employees.
- Address and resolve a wide variety of concerns and complaints; adjust grievances.
- Counsel employees; address performance problems through corrective disciplinary action.
- Plan, coordinate and arrange for appropriate training for assigned personnel.
- Assist in planning, prioritizing, assigning, supervising and reviewing the work of the District Police Officers and department staff.
- Provide on the job training for District Police Officers and department staff.
- Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; prepare various reports.
- Act as liaison with departments on campus, and other outside agencies as assigned.
- Carry out Patrol, enforcement and investigative duties.
- Mediate interpersonal disputes; handle confrontations with hostile persons.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints.
- Build and maintain positive relationship with co-workers, other District employees and students.
- Maintain the level of proficiency needed for the position; remain current with case and statutory law.
- In the absence of the Chief of Police or Assistant Chief of Police, work with College Administrators on urgent safety and security issues.
- Assume the role of "Incident Commander" at significant incident scenes.
- Operate a variety of police equipment including patrol car, two-way radio, firearms, and various tools.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of: Principles, methods and techniques of law enforcement work; pertinent federal, state, county laws; investigative techniques; principles of supervision; principles and practices of work safety; crowd control; fire and hazardous materials dangers; Incident Command System (ICS), SEMS and NIMS.
Ability to: Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for diverse backgrounds; organize and direct law enforcement operations; prepare clear reports; establish cooperative working relationships; assess situations and make rapid decisions; communicate effectively; supervise staff; train staff; demonstrate excellent work history with high ethical standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
- Any combination equivalent to an Associate's degree AND four (4) years experience as a peace officer.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Possess California POST Advance Certificate, within sixty (60) days of hire.
- Valid California driver's license.
- Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates, within sixty (60) days of hire.
