Position Overview

The Department of Mathematics invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for part- to full-time teaching positions. These positions may be regular lecturer positions teaching face-to-face and/or online lecturer positions for the development and/or instruction of online courses. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester for development and/or instruction of course(s). Primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the type of lecturer appointment and the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the online course(s).

Application materials will be placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate courses in mathematics consistent with departmental instructional needs.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Current Openings:

For the academic year 2026-2027, we have openings for both full-time and part-time lecturers. These are in-person (face-to-face) teaching positions, requiring teaching on the Lawrence campus five days per week. The courses are College Algebra with a workshop, Introductory Quantitative Reasoning with a workshop, and Introductory Statistics with a workshop. The duties follow the Regular Lecturer Duties below. Review of applications will begin May 1, 2026. The position will start August 18, 2026. Annual appointments run from August 18 to May 16 and may be renewed based on a successful annual evaluation and teaching needs.

Job Description

Regular Lecturer Duties:
Part-time lecturers are expected to teach up to six credit hours and full-time lecturers are expected to teach up to twelve credit hours, of undergraduate mathematics courses per semester as scheduled. They are expected to take their teaching responsibilities seriously and to strive for excellence in the classroom.

100% - Provide instruction for all class meetings. Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades. Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. The lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours. Attend instructor meetings held by course coordinators and attend other mandatory department meetings. Adhere to departmental, college and university policies and procedures.

Online Lecturer and/or Online Course Developer Duties:
Part-time online lecturers are expected to teach up to six credit hours and full-time lecturers are expected to teach up to twelve credit hours, of undergraduate mathematics courses per semester as scheduled. They are expected to take their teaching responsibilities seriously and to strive for excellence in the classroom.

100% - Provide instruction throughout the term. Maintain course management site, develop assignments, write exams, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades. Work with the KU Center for Online and Distance Learning to schedule exams. Hold regular office hours, both in person and online, for students in the classes taught. Be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours and respond to student and staff emails in a timely fashion. Follow department policies for online courses as communicated by associate chair or course coordinator. Adhere to departmental, college, and university policies and procedures.

Some positions may require to build an online course for the unit and/or the College Online Programs. Design the course in accordance with department guidance and KU standards, which include working with instructional design staff in the Center for Online and Distance Learning. Work in a collaborative environment, utilizing the expertise of the other major instructors in the department. Complete the course design process within a specific deadline to ensure the course is fully designed and quality reviewed prior to the date the course is to be offered, as determined by the academic department.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications for both Regular, Online Lecturers, and Online Course Developer Duties: Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.

Required qualifications:

  1. Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field that has a strong math component. Include a copy of your transcript, if the degree has been obtained in the past 5 years.
  2. Previous Mathematics teaching experience at the college or university level.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications for both Regular, Online Lecturers, and Online Course Developer Duties:

  1. Previous Mathematics teaching experience at the University of Kansas.
