Job Summary:

This posting is for a pooled position. This means we accept applications on an ongoing basis to create a qualified candidate pool. If/when a position becomes available, we review applications from this pool and may interview candidates whose qualifications best match the specific opening.

The Adult Basic Skills instructor provides an instructional program to meet the needs of the students in compliance with the Adult Education Act. The instructor is responsible to the Dean of Academic Foundations and Extended Learning or designees in carrying out his/her assigned instructional tasks. The instructor shall perform such other duties as assigned by his/her immediate supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in education or related field, or equivalent combination of experience and education/training related to teaching and/or working with the GED population. One year, full or part-time experience in instructional setting teaching adults. Documented ability to plan and implement instructional programs appropriate for adult learners. Proficient use of computers. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities. The ability to communicate effectively as a teacher and to operate as an effective member of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s degree with a major in Adult Education, Reading, English, Math or related field, or completion of 27 graduate quarter hours in Education or related discipline. A valid or previous OR 7-12 teaching license. Fluent in Spanish language. Knowledge of strategies and techniques to instruct students with disabilities. Experience teaching adults in ABE / GED programs or non-traditional alternative programs. Experience teaching basic computer skills. Teaching experience in community college.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office or classroom setting with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards. Learned physical skill is required to operate keyboard or other office equipment. Requires sufficient visual acuity to recognize alphanumeric characters. Requires sufficient hearing and speaking ability to communicate effectively with staff and students.

Essential Duties:

  • Act as a team member of the Adult Basic Skills Department. Instruct assigned basic skills and GED preparation.
  • Monitor and evaluate learning progress, determine the learning needs of students.
  • Provide a classroom environment conducive to student learning.
  • Teach classes as assigned following approved course outline, prepare and develop materials for assigned classes, provide students with course syllabi reflecting the objectives of each course taught.
  • Participate in Learning Standards training and on-going professional development in Learning Standards; demonstrate lesson planning utilizing Learning Standards.
  • Establish and maintain close supervision of students’ attendance.
  • Participate in curriculum development, recommend textbooks and other instructional materials and equipment, recommend course outline revisions.
  • Maintain college facilities and equipment.
  • Keep abreast of technological changes and development in the subject area, innovative teaching techniques, and continuously strive for professional development.
  • Attend staff meetings, work in a cooperative manner with others in the department and college, respond to emails and departmental requests for information in a timely manner, represent the department at pertinent meetings as required.
  • Promote a positive image of college and college programs.
  • Participate in department processes designed to recruit and retain students.
  • Participate in Student Appraisal of Classroom Learning.
  • Maintain posted office hours. Provide class time to students for course advising and support.

Salary and Compensation Information: Courses are paid on a per-credit basis. New Part-time Faculty begin at Step 1 of the payscale, with steps being “rolled” once per term, if eligible.

Table 1 illustrates the cost per credit for each step on the pay scale. Instructors new to the College typically start at the rate listed in column 1.
Table 3 illustrates the compensation per hour for meetings, training, advising, curriculum development, or other related work.
