The Core Facility of SMART (Shenzhen Institute of Medical Sciences) is an institution and platform that specializes in managing large-scale scientific instrumentation and installments. It consists of four major centers: the Bio-tech Center, Animal Experimentation Center, Equipment R&D Center, and the Biomedical Data Center.
- The Bio-Tech Center provides a full range of testing, method development and data analysis services for scientific research and technical training in life science, medicine and other related fields.
- The Animal Experimentation Center provides services in animal housing, disease modeling, phenotypic analysis and more.
- The Equipment R&D Center focuses on innovative equipment upgrading and the development of critical instrumentation, driving localization and self-reliance in scientific technologies.
- The Biomedical Data Center integrates general-purpose computing, high-performance computing, and AI-powered computing to meet the growing needs of large-scale data processing and complex scientific computation.

Positions and Qualifications
1. Director of Animal Experimentation Center
Qualifications:
- PhD in laboratory animal science (including veterinary medicine), biomedical sciences, pharmacy, or related fields;
- At least 5 years of experience in managing SPF-level laboratory animal facilities; familiarity with animal experimentation center operations and technical systems. Senior management experience in internationally renowned animal centers may qualify for flexible consideration.
- Familiar with domestic and international operations of animal experimentation centers, including SOP’s, quality control standards, pathogen detection methods, animal welfare, and ethics. Awareness of global best practices in facility management is desirable.
- Strong leadership, coordination, and team management skills, with a strong sense of public service and professional responsibility.
- Excellent communication and writing skills in both Chinese and English; overseas experience is preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement the medium and long-term strategic plan for the Animal Experimentation Center, drive innovation in management models and technical capabilities, and build a high-performance animal experimentation facility.
- Establish and refine systems for institutional governance, service workflows, and operational protocols to ensure efficient operations and financial sustainability.
- Under the supervision of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee, the successful candidate will oversee quality management systems, occupational health and safety, and ethical reviews for compliance of animal experimentation.
- Manage the operations of the animal laboratory, ensuring standardized facility management and usage. Oversee animal husbandry, breeding, and experimentation, while advancing innovation and standardization in animal experimentation technologies.
- Lead team development through talent recruitment and implementation of effective training plans for the Animal Experimentation Center.
- Execute other tasks and strategic initiatives as assigned by the institutional leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiar with animal experiments in neuroscience, oncology, infectious diseases, or immunology.
- Participation as an organizer or core team member in AAALAC or CNAS accreditation processes.
- Experience in the generation of genetically modified animals.
2. Leader of Biomedical Imaging Core Facility
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, Precision Instruments, or a related field (the majors are not mandatory for candidates with substantial study or work experience in relevant areas). Postdoctoral experience, senior academic titles, or international study/work experience are preferred;
- Expertise in microscopy imaging techniques, including sample preparation, advanced microscopy data acquisition, and data interpretation, with familiarity with cutting-edge ultra-high-resolution imaging technologies;
- A minimum of 5 years of experience managing imaging core facilities in academic or research institutions is strongly preferred;
- Strong hands-on skills and a passion for imaging technologies;
- Excellent communication and team management skills, with a strong sense of responsibility and service orientation.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Biomedical Imaging Core Facility, including laboratory management, SOP development, and the establishment of safety regulations and emergency response plans.
- Ensure the efficient, smooth operation of all equipment in the core facility;
- Manage the technical supporting team in the core facility, such as technician recruitment, training, supervision, and performance evaluation;
- Develop and optimize SOPs for sample preparation, data acquisition, and data interpretation in microscopic imaging.
- Coordinate the assessment of equipment needs, procurement, and budget planning for the core facility, as well as the life long management of the equipment in the core facility.
- Define service offerings, propose pricing schemes, and prepare operational, service, performance, and cost-benefit reports;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
3. Director of Equipment R&D Center
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, Precision Instruments, Optics, or a closely related discipline.
- At least 8 years of relevant experience in scientific equipment R&D, instrumentation maintenance, or high-end manufacturing, including 5+ years of team management experience.
- Deep understanding of emerging trends and technologies in advanced scientific instrumentation, particularly in life sciences and medical research.
- Proven ability to lead cross-disciplinary collaborations and translate research needs into technical solutions.
- Strong sense of responsibility, with excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Chinese; international experience is highly desirable.
- Full-time commitment required for the duration of the appointment.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement medium- to long-term strategic plans for the Center, positioning it as a key contributor to talent development, research services, and innovation in instrumentation.
- Oversee the Center’s operations, including coordination, resource allocation, and performance evaluation, ensuring both operational efficiency and financial sustainability.
- Lead and manage a multidisciplinary technical team, including recruitment, training, and performance assessment.
- Drive the development, optimization, and localization of scientific instruments and core equipment; promote innovation in design, functionality, and maintenance.
- Integrate and streamline instrumentation and resources to maximize utilization and sharing across research units.
- Carry out other duties as assigned by the institute leadership.
4. Leader of Flow Cytometry Core Facility
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, Precision Instruments, or a related field (the majors are not mandatory for candidates with substantial study or work experience in relevant areas). Postdoctoral experience, senior academic titles, or international study/work experience are preferred;
- Expertise in flow cytometry, including sample preparation, advanced data acquisition, and analysis using flow cytometers, with knowledge of the latest advancements in the field.
- Candidates with experience in managing flow cytometry core facilities in universities or research institutions are strongly preferred;
- Strong hands-on skills and a passion for flow cytometry techniques;
- Excellent communication and team management skills, with a strong sense of responsibility and service orientation.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Flow Cytometry Core Facility, including laboratory management, SOP development, and the establishment of safety regulations and emergency response plans.
- Ensure the efficient, smooth operation of all equipment in the core facility;
- Manage the technical supporting team in the core facility, such as technician recruitment, training, supervision, and performance evaluation;
- Develop and optimize SOPs for sample preparation, data acquisition, and data interpretation in flow cytometry/cell sorting.
- Coordinate the assessment of equipment needs, procurement, and budget planning for the core facility, as well as the life long management of the equipment in the core facility.
- Define service offerings, propose pricing schemes, and prepare operational, service, performance, and cost-benefit reports;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
