JOB SUMMARY :
The Post-Baccalaureate Clinical Translational Sciences and Health Services Fellowship Program at Texas Southern University offers Biomedical, health services, or science major post-Bac the foundational scientific and career development training necessary for a successful graduate/professional training in medicine, public health, biomedical sciences, or data science. This is an 1824-month fellowship program. The fellow will receive research training and individualized one-on-one research mentoring, supported by a multidisciplinary team of investigators with social, behavioral, public health, and clinical expertise in lab- based research, clinical Translational Sciences and Health Services research. This is a full-time training experience that includes opportunities to conduct clinical, social, and/or behavioral research using community-based participatory methods. The fellow supports clinical Translational Sciences and health services research across the project lifecycle feasibility, start-up, recruitment, data collection/management, analysis, and dissemination while building skills for graduate/professional training in medicine, public health, biomedical sciences, or data science.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :
The post-Bac fellow is a highly collaborative, self-motivated, creative person who is adaptable to new processes with the capacity to function independently. The post-Bac Fellow is interested in community- engagement research practices, health services, and Clinical Translational Sciences.

Essential Duties Summary

Research Training and Education (~60%)

  • Participate in formalized research training curriculum and seminars.
  • Obtains CITI credentialing and/or other required training for biomedical research.
  • Complete research tasks (lab-based research, clinical Translational Sciences, and Health Services) assigned by mentor.
  • Engages in clinical Translational Sciences and health services research across the project lifecycle feasibility, start-up, recruitment, data collection/management, analysis, and dissemination.
  • Coordinate IRB submissions/amendments, maintain regulatory binders/eReg, schedule visits, manage REDCap/eConsent, track milestones, and ensure protocol adherence
  • Conduct literature search and review research topics.
  • Prepare and present research findings at local and national conferences.
  • Supports workflow mapping, implementation checklists, process/outcome measures and meetings Prepare and submit manuscripts for publications.
  • Supports applications for funding as assigned by mentor.

Community Engagement and Health outreach (30%)

  • Plans, participates, and facilitates diverse community engagement and health outreach program (e.g.: health outreach, health education events/ webinars, health fairs)
  • Plans, prepares, participates, and facilitates community based participatory research models (e.g.: focus group, community engagement studio, town hall) on diverse health related topics and presents findings to multidisciplinary team.

Teaching (~10%)

  • Support teaching and learning in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences program through lectures, interactive lessons, and assessments in health-related topics.
  • Coordinates students, interns and volunteers supporting lab-based research, clinical Translational Sciences, and health Services initiatives.

Bachelor’s degree (awarded within the last 1-3 years) in a relevant field (e.g., Biology, Public Health, Statistics, Psychology, Health Informatics, Engineering, biomedical science).

  • Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks, and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grids, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment systems.

Work Experience

Required:
Prior research exposure (capstone, research assistant role, internship, or lab/clinic experience).

Preferred:

  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and presentation tools; basic stats of literacy; strong writing and organization.
  • Bilingual e.g.: Spanish, Asian dialects, etc.
  • Training such as CITI ( GCP /Human Subjects); prior to IRB or clinical research coordination experience.
  • Qualitative methods (interviews, coding with NVivo/Atlas.ti) or implementation of science exposure.

Working/Environmental Conditions

  • Clinic/lab and office settings; possible evening/weekend events for recruitment. Willingness to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the program
  • Works closely with direct report to complete assigned tasks and activities in research
  • Some travel locally and to surrounding counties in the greater Houston area is expected (~25%)
