Post-Doctoral Associate in Quantitative Wildlife Ecology

We are looking for a quantitative wildlife ecologist to join our team to study how coyote and fox interactions change across an urbanization gradient. We are excited about recruiting an individual with specific skills in the capture of urban canids using leg-hold and cable restraint traps, statistical analysis of animal behavior, and GIS/geospatial analysis.

The task of the new team member will be to capture and radio collar foxes and coyotes in and around the Twin Cities Metro Area and then model their space use and behavioral patterns.

The post-doctoral researcher will also be responsible for coordinating a team to deploy and monitor behavioral playback cameras, developing a data analysis pipeline for the resulting videos, and writing manuscripts. Additionally, this postdoc will work closely with a collaborative team of disease ecologists, movement ecologists, and veterinarians. If the applicant has not completed their degree, they will be hired as a predoctoral associate (9545) until their PhD is conferred.

Percentage breakdown of duties:

  • 20% Captures and collars coyotes and foxes in urban and rural settings.
  • 15% Coordinates behavioral playback data collection
  • 20% Develops analytical pipeline to model how the space use and behavior of each species changes across the urbanization gradient.
  • 35% Writes and submits manuscripts
  • 10% Other duties including preparing and delivering presentations; conducting outreach with the public; and working closely with land managers

Preferred Qualifications: Competitive candidates should be highly motivated and possess a PhD in quantitative/spatial ecology of wildlife or a related discipline with a strong quantitative emphasis (ABD candidates will be considered). Specific experience trapping urban canids using cable restraints and leg-hold traps, deploying behavioral playback equipment, and analyzing wildlife relocation data using advanced spatial statistics in R and QGIS is required. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment is essential.
