Postdoctoral Fellow - Biological Sciences

Job Summary

A training position designed to learn through engagement in an advanced level of scientific technical and administrative work in support of research efforts in an assigned laboratory. The postdoctoral fellow researcher will design experiments, conduct experiments, analyze data, and disseminate results through publications and presentations. The researcher will also be involved in maintaining laboratory strains and equipment and assisting with the training of mentees.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.
  • Write, prepare, and publish articles in scientific journals on topics related to multicellular evolution.
  • Participate in the grant-writing process to secure additional funding on this topic.
  • Analyze the results of experiments using volvocine algae and other multicellular model systems.
  • Conduct experiments in the laboratory to understand how multicellular organisms evolve using the volvocine algae.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants, and other research personnel.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and strains.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work.
  • Advise principal investigators, other postdocs, students and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures and other technological aspects of research activities.
  • Read the relevant scientific literature and develop future research ideas.
  • Review articles prepared by others.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

PhD in biology, genetics, biochemistry or related field from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

A background in using genomics and data science approaches for understanding how multicellular organisms evolve. Experience with eukaryotic algae culture, growth and analysis of their development. Experience with microscopy. Experience obtaining federal funding is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with good organizational skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work independently with only general supervision. Ability to complete work and to meet deadlines. Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Ability to prioritize tasks.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required). Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position. Recruitment Period: Until Filled. Augusta University offers a variety of benefits to full-time benefits-eligible employees and some of our half-time (or more) employees.
