Postdoctoral Fellow- MCG Physiology

Job Summary

This is a training position designed to learn, through engagement, in an advanced level of scientific, technical and administrative work in support of research efforts in a research lab in the Department of Physiology in the Medical College of Georgia. Responsibilities of the position include working with Dr. Christopher M. Waters, Ph.D., to conduct NIH- and VA-sponsored research on mechanisms of lung injury and repair and pulmonary fibrosis; designing and conducting experimental studies within an interdisciplinary team; and organizing, analyzing, and presenting experimental data.

Further, the job involves presenting at national/international conferences and writing manuscripts. The PI will closely work with the successful candidate for training in these aspects, and the candidate will be required to apply for independent postdoctoral fellowship grants.

Responsibilities

  • Project Planning: Participate in project planning and development of research protocols and complete experiments while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.
  • Data Analyses: Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Teach and participate in complex bacteriological, chemical and/or radio-chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis, macro- and micro-serological, histologic and cell culture procedures.
  • Data Dissemination: Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Present findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Publications: Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; review articles prepared by others.
  • Research Oversight: Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work.
  • Technical Instruction: Advise principal investigator, other postdocs, students and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures and other technological aspects of research activities.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair and operate microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers and other complex scientific equipment; instruct others in operation of equipment.
  • Other: Perform other duties incidental to work described herein.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. or equivalent from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with cell culture, molecular biology, animal models of lung injury, inflammation, epithelial biology, mechanical ventilation, and pulmonary physiology are desirable. In addition, having previous evidence of successful grant writing is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to handle rodents.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday-Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required). Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
