Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Resilient Temperature- and Pressure-Sensitive Paints for Hyperspectral Imaging

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in “Resilient Temperature- and Pressure-Sensitive Paints for Hyperspectral Imaging” to join Prof. Jin-Chong Tan’s group (Multifunctional Materials & Composites Laboratory: https://eng.ox.ac.uk/mmclab/) in the Department of Engineering Science at Oxford University. The post is funded by the ERC Proof-of-Concept (PoC) grant: RESILIENT and is fixed-term for 12 months. The project start date is 1st January 2026.

The RESILIENT PoC will focus on the engineering of mechanically durable and optically efficient coatings/films/paints, which may be facilely applied as a photoluminescent layer, targeting in situ detection and non-contact visualization of surface temperatures and pressures.

You should hold a PhD/DPhil (or near completion) in materials engineering, materials science, spectroscopy or fluorescent systems. Candidates with prior experience in the design, development and engineering of luminescent sensors and pressure sensitive paints are strongly encouraged to apply. The applicant must be able to demonstrate a high level of competence in experimental lab-based research. Please note that ‘near completion’ means that your PhD thesis has been submitted or your viva has been held.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof. Tan (email: jin-chong.tan@eng.ox.ac.uk).

For more information about working at the Department, see www.eng.ox.ac.uk/about/work-with-us/.

Only online applications received before midday on 5 September 2025 can be considered. You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
